Hello all,

In the process of switching to R in my computer science course, I found that there is not much online documentation for the beginner. So, I wrote up the following pdf documentation that you may find useful. Even though some of the documentation is specific to the particular statistical tests for my course much of it is general.

Learning how to use R can be frustrating because, although it is simple after you learn how to use it, it is not intuitive. Furthermore, practically all the online documentation, manuals, and YouTube videos are presented from the perspective of someone who knows the R command line, assumes the user knows the R command line, and/or explains how to use Deducer in terms of the R command line.

This perspective of the common documentation is not helpful, either to the undergraduate student who is learning both the software and the statistics behind it or to the undergraduate professor who has an aversion to the command line and is considering switching to R.

Deducer is a fantastic tool and is no doubt responsible for much of the increase in the use of R in the academic community. I think, however, that a bottleneck in the path to future growth is the command-line-centric perspective of most of the documentation for Deducer.

Best regards,
Stan

Stuff like this is what makes the internet great. Thanks for sharing. I'm taking a course and downloading R tonight with deducer. Thanks!

Greetings Stanley

Thanks for sharing this useful short guides for deducer. Wonder if you have more to share :)

Please let me know if this is feasible.  I am a statistician that use state extensively. I plan to get acquainted with R as well.
Specifically, I am looking this type of short guides that are so useful.

My contact info is jn...@cdc.gov

Hi all,

Since the older Win install of Deducer is R 2.10 ish I needed to run
some newer packages.

When I try simple update packages it seems to kill JGR and/or Deducer so
just installed R core 3.1.1 and tried the instruction s on Ian's Deducer
home page.

Not working?

Hi all,

OK I began thinking that the artifacts of older R instillations could
have been an issue.

I uninstalled ALL R versions and deleted all directories for all R
previous installations, including the older Deducer for older versions.

I did make a copy of all packages in my most recent library directory
and saved those. The goal was to not have to take time too re-install
all the packages I use.

Ian has a note on the Deducer page for non-standard R installations.
"I have a custom library location in my documents directory, I can
create a file named launchJGR.bat"

I have not quite gotten that to work even though I do a a separate
directory located C:\R\library

I was able to use the line Ian provides...
install.packages(c("JGR","Deducer","DeducerExtras"))
library(JGR)
JGR()

..in the new R 3.1.1 console.

I only installed the new R as 32 bit and seems to work.

However Deducer would not come up as I am accustomed to with the Data
Viewer window only one called table.

I did another Win install using the older Deducer installer from the
home page and just copied the Deducer.exe file from the Win-install
version to the new 3.1.1 bin directory and now it opens and displays
correctly.

Now to make sure the packages I need to use are up to date for 3.1.1 and
time I get back to work.
