The excellent LearnR blog had a post today about making a rose plot in
ggplot2 (http://learnr.wordpress.com/2010/08/16/consultants-chart-in-ggplot2/).
It can be made even easier with the new ggplot2 GUI included in the
latest version of Deducer. After the template is made, the plot can be
generated with 4 clicks of the mouse. I just made a quick video
tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHYATHLM5sY

The generated template file is available at:
http://neolab.stat.ucla.edu/cranstats/rose.ggtmpl

Great job Ian (my hand is getting tired from patting today).

I also published this here:

Might this be a good time to consider starting up a blog for deducer?

I even published the tutorial I gave on how to blog for R users here:
(not pressing or anything :)  )

Cheers,
Tal

Just tried recreating the example in the video and I keep getting
stuck with a stacked barplot (image located here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3734701/JGR.jpg).
Any idea on what I am doing wrong?

In fiddling around with options...I also noticed that when clicking on
the position button near the top...the elements in the drop down list
are not selectable with a mouse click. I have to scroll with the arrow
keys and hit enter for the setting to take effect. I am running Mac
OSX.

Thanks for the info and this is indeed an awesome piece of work. I
look forward to using it.

The category variable needs to be a factor or character vector. The
GUI tries to be a little smart about converting variables to factors
when it would create an error (notice that fill is converted with
as.factor ), but there is a limit to how well it can guess. Try this
instead:

DF <- data.frame(variable = factor(1:10), value = sample(10, replace = TRUE))

also note that you can edit the aesthetic mapping by hand if you right
click on the variable.

When you click on position a small dialog should appear with a combo
box, two text fields and an okay button. Do you see this dialog? Are
you not able to interact with all the components, or just the combo
box? What version of Mac os, R and Java are you using.

Thanks for the info. Manually editing the variable to include
as.factor() did the trick.

As far as the combo box goes...I am running Mac OS X v10.6.4, R
v2.11.1 and I am not sure about Java.

When clicking on the button..I see the combo box and I can click on
the drop down list. The problem is that I can't scroll through the
options in the list or select them with the mouse. I can only do this
with the arrow keys and hitting enter. The same thing applies with the
drop down menu right next to it (Contains bin, bin2d etc). I can click
to expand the drop down and highlight what I can see in the list...but
when I click on a selection with the mouse...nothing happens and the
original selection remains intact. I can't scroll any further than I
can see by default without using the arrow keys. (http://

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3734701/JGR-3.jpg)

The drop down lists under the x and y variables (..count.. etc.) are
selectable with a mouse click.

Humm... that is odd. what do you get entering:

.jcall("java/lang/System","S","getProperty","java.version")

Are you using the 64bit launcher or the 32 bit? If you are using the
32 bit launcher try the 64 bit one JGR-1.6-SL at
http://www.rforge.net/JGR/files/ .

Do any of the other combo boxes in Deducer not work? What about the
one at the top of the variable selector (where DF appears)? can you
load a few data.frames and check that that combo box functions both in
the plot builder and in any other dialog (try one-sample tests).

One more thing to try... I don't know why it would matter, but go to
preferences>Deducer and deselect "Native looking file chooser."
Restart JGR and see if the problem persists.

I did find somewhat strange behavior. It seems that I was clicking
once to expand the menus and then clicking again to select the item
from the drop down. This does not work. Clicking and holding the mouse
button down and then scrolling and releasing on the menu item seems to
work. This behavior is consistent in all the menus. The behavior is
also consistent in the menu for the data sets. I can see them all but
have to hold the mouse button down and then release to change data
sets.

The result of the java version check is below:
> .jcall("java/lang/System","S","getProperty","java.version")
[1] "1.6.0_20"

Deselecting "Native looking file chooser" did not seem to have an
effect on the menus. The issue seems to be consistent in all menus I
have tried.

I am running the 32bit version of JGR. I tried switching to the 64bit
version and the behavior remains the same.
