iPhones running iOS 16 or later include a feature called Live Activities that you can use to follow sports scores in real time on your Lock Screen, so you don't miss a thing. Keep reading to learn how it works.
Live Activities in the TV app are available for MLB games for users in the U.S., Canada, Australia, U.K., Brazil, Mexico, Japan, and South Korea, in addition to NBA and Premier League games for users in the U.S. and Canada only. The feature will likely be expanded to other sports leagues in the future.
In My Sports in the News app , you can follow your favorite sports, teams, leagues, and athletes; receive stories from top sports publications, local newspapers, and more; access scores, schedules, and standings for the top professional and college leagues; and watch highlights.
Apple introduced Live Activities on iPhones with the release of iOS 16, but the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max take this feature a step further letting users follow live sporting events on the Dynamic Island. Live Activities are designed to provide current updates on time-sensitive matters, like tracking a delivery or rideshare request. While this is very useful for live tracking, Apple has another use case in mind for Live Activities and the Dynamic Island: tracking the scores of sporting events.
Sports fans would love to watch every event live, but that just isn't possible. As a result, they often find themselves switching back and forth between an online game feed and other apps. Thanks to support for Live Activities, iPhone users can now choose to follow a specific game and view live updates and score changes on the Dynamic island and the lock screen. A handful of apps currently support live sports scores, including the Apple TV app (for NBA, MLB, and Premier League games), NBA app, MLB app, and more recently, the NCAA March Madness Live app.
To get live scores from the Apple TV app, scroll down to the 'Sports' tab on the 'Watch Now' page. A few popular or live sporting events will be displayed here, but users can tap the arrow next to the 'Sports' tab to view the full sports page. At the top of this page, a 'Watch Live' option will show all current and upcoming sporting events in one place.
The feature will likely be supported on more leagues in the future, and users can't follow games that are currently delayed, suspended, or have ended. Despite a few limitations, Apple's game-tracking feature is a great tool for sports fans who want to multitask while following an ongoing event on their iPhone 14 Pro.
While the number of apps that support live scores on the Dynamic island are still quite limited, a handy little app called Sports Alerts displays scores for a range of sports and leagues. The supported leagues include MBL, NFL, NBA, NHL, WNBA, NCAA, UEFA Champions League, Premier League, ATP, WTA, PGA, NASCAR, Formula 1, and more. While the app doesn't broadcast the live games, it does display live scores, and users can customize alerts for their selected leagues.
To customize alerts, users can tap the 'Alerts' tab, select their league of choice, and then choose which alerts they'd like to receive. If users have an iPhone 14 Pro model, live scores will be displayed on the Dynamic island. Long-pressing the Dynamic Island will show an expanded view with more information. Other iPhones will display the live scores on the lock screen.
One of the features Apple added to iOS 16 is called Live Activities, a broader update to lock screen notifications. The feature will push a widget that allows real-time information you can use to follow live sports on your iPhone.
Unless you are watching the game live, you can expect a bit of delay with the game details you will get. However, there is an optional feature you can turn on for more frequent game updates. But remember that this optional setting can drain your battery faster.

Download the free ABC app on your smartphone, tablet or connected TV to stream full episodes of your favorite shows, watch live news and events, or discover new live streaming channels available to watch 24/7.
The company has also launched dedicated music, video, news, gaming and fitness services that work across its devices. Now, with the rollout of these new sports-specific features, it is clear there is a concerted effort to make the Apple ecosystem an ideal companion for sports fans.
I continue to get notifications, not only on my AppleTV device, but also on my phone, from AppleTV that a sports event has a close score (i.e. an NBA game, college game, etc), even though I have turned off notifications for these on both my appleTV and my phone. And usually it's for some game I would not have ever "favorited" a team or even looked at a game for.
On your iPhone, are you getting a repeat of the same close came notification that you see on your Apple TV, or is it a different, but similar sports notification? You mentioned that these aren't your Favorite Teams, have you had the chance to double-check they aren't accidentally selected as part of the Pick Your Favorite Teams feature? Here's where to check:
Again, you'll want to remove teams you don't want notifications about. This is from Watch sports in the Apple TV app on iPhone. In this link, there's extra information that may help you adjust your Apple TV app on iPhone sports notifications further.
If the issue continues, let us know if those settings were enabled or disabled and if you had any success adjusting them. Also, let us know the exact text of the notification you received after adjusting these settings and on which device. This will help us to pinpoint the precise kind of sports notification you're getting.
My Sports is not only for showcasing sport-specific news and live scores though. By setting up My Sports, you can also get notifications in the Apple TV app to watch live games, and if you have the best iPhone so far in 2023, the iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max, live scores can sit in the Dynamic Island so you never miss a goal, touchdown, or slam dunk.
Similar to watching a live game, highlights are a region-locked feature that works with selected sports in My Sports. To view highlights, swipe through the My Sports section until you find Highlights, then tap Play to launch the video straight from the News app.
