Hi!

We've just completed a note on "Population Ethics: A Position-Based Axiomatic Approach".  The abstract is below and the paper is available at

Comments will be much appreciated!

Best,

A social planner considers the far future, asking which population profile should be preferred, where none of the people involved has been born or conceived yet. A population's profile is given by the number of individuals who are in each possible position. Thus, symmetry among individuals who are in the same position is presupposed by the model. The model allows populations to be of different sizes, and assumes that they can be compared by the social planner. Three simple conditions characterize the relations that can be represented in a utilitarian way, that is, by assigning a number to each position so that profiles are ranked according to the sum of utilities across individuals.

Hi again!

Following our post a few days ago, it was brought to our attention that our result is implied by Theorem 3.1 of Krantz, Luce, Suppes, and Tversky (1971).  Further, this result has been used for deriving utilitarian aggregation in Nebel (2024), though with a different interpretation than ours.  We revised the paper to include these references.

A Two-Period Stochastic Linear Programming Game

Dear All:

This paper explores the possibility of the probability distribution chosen by nature that determines the expected pay-off from the control variable vector in the second period, to depend on the control variable vector chosen in the initial period. Motivation for such a model could arise from global warming and/or climate change.
