Hello fellow makers, I am visiting Atlanta for a couple days from Milwaukee WI for IWF 2018(a wood working convention) and will have some free time in the evenings. My question is what maker/hacker type things are there to do in Atlanta? Are there any good factory tours, museums or any other things that a maker would prolly like to see. I especially enjoy machining and anything cnc related.

Thanks in advance and keep making!

Hey Steve,

Good gosh man! IWF is the biggest CNC exhibition I've ever seen! You still want more?

Off the top of my head I can't think of anything similar to MLK's brewery tours or major manufacturing facility tours like Kohler (Coca Cola World maybe -- I've never been) . But if you're down town by the World Congress Center, you really should do the Georgia Aquarium -- if the wildlife doesn't impress, the actual aquariums might -- molded 1.5' thick crystal clear acrylic. Not certain of the hours of operation at night time. And of course Freeside Atlanta and MASS Collective are just down the road from the WCC.

Hi Steve,

It looks like the IWF is 8/22 - 8/25. If you're available tomorrow
night, you can swing by Decatur Makers open build night. Our weekly
open house is usually a good time to see the space in action, meet some
members, get a tour, and even make something! We have a good sized CNC
in particular.

You can also tour other makerspaces in the area, including the Invention
Studio at Georgia Tech which isn't really open as a public space but you
can walk in and there's probably a student who can show you around.

More options are MODA http://www.museumofdesign.org/ which often has
cool maker-y exhibits.

There's the World of Coke but that's not really a factory tour, it very
touristy and I wouldn't strongly recommend.

A lot of cool industrial spaces have been remade into bars and
restaurants along the Atlanta Beltline. And Downtown Decatur is a great
spot to walk around, shop, eat, drink, and check out a lot of public art.

For events try https://accessatlanta.com or
https://creativeloafing.com/See-and-Do or even meetup.com

Enjoy your visit and hope to see you at our makerspace!

Anybody going to IWF tomorrow? That’s my only chance to make it down there.

Bill
