Hey all,

Thanks for a great app, it was actually my first Android app purchase
when my Nexus One arrived.

I started out with automated refreshes turned on, then added the
widget, but to avoid some battery life issues, I disabled the auto-
refresh and removed the widget. However, Decaf still seems to randomly
show up as running, sometimes alerting me that it cannot make a
connection to monitor my EC2 instances, and often ends in a Force-
Close scenario, or telling me it will retry connecting later.

How can I reset Decaf's settings to stop this behavior? I only want to
refresh EC2 monitoring when I manually trigger it, and when I exit the
app, I want it to stop, completely, without restarting in the
background later on. Do I need to uninstall the app and re-install it
to clear out any old settings? I don't want any background monitoring
to take place.

Thanks,
Ian

To clarify: I use Decaf v1.1.1 and the "Watch Instances" setting is
NOT checked (text below says 'Background service disabled'), and I do
not have the Widget installed in my Launcher.

However, I not only see Decaf running upon boot-up (as mentioned to
another user which you claim simply checks for a newer version of the
app), but I see Decaf running randomly and alerting me that
connections cannot be made, or errors out and gives a Force Close
button... when I have done NOTHING to run the app. I have an app
shortcut on a launcher screen with other work-related things, and I
almost never launch it (monitoring EC2 is not one of my primary
duties).

Having dabbled in Android development myself, I do understand that
it's up to the OS to fully kill off an app when it's not being used
any longer, but it puzzles me how Decaf can start background
monitoring on my phone (and have failed data connections) when I have
everything disabled and do not manually run the app.

Thanks for any assistance,
Ian

thanks for buying, and thanks for the report. (and thanks for the second as well :) )

we will have to check this, because this is clearly a bug. when you disable 'Watch instances' we disable the components catching and handling certain intents/events. do you have any idea when it gives a forceclose? when receiving an sms?

we will try to reproduce (on a nexus one, so that should be ok.)

you might try to reinstall, but than you have to do the copypasting of keys again. it might help if you don't choose the widget. but it would surprise me. anyway, i'll try to find and fix it tomorrow.

I've had the phone completely idle, charging on a wall charger, and
it'll pop up with an alert that Decaf has run into an unexpected error
and gives me a Force Close button. Next time I see it, I'll tap the
'Report' button instead. Generally happens every few days. I can't say
whether it's related to SMS or not, as I tend to use a send/receive a
lot of data on my phone (1.5GB last month).

I do have 'Advanced Task Killer' installed, and often see a LOT of
apps running which I don't manually start. Right now, for example, I
see "Gesture Search" in the list which I haven't manually activated in
several weeks, and recently rebooted my phone as well, so I'm curious
how/why these apps keep running. It wasn't clear to me, either, from
the other post about "beware of task killers" what risk there is, in
my case, of killing Decaf with a task killer. For me, of *course* I
want to completely kill off the app (which I just did while typing
this message), but I know it's going to re-appear in the task list in
the next 10-15 minutes, even though I'm not going to touch my phone
while I get some work done.

I don't mind re-typing the keys if it'll solve the issue. If this is
some lingering result of installing the widget and then removing it,
maybe Android doesn't fully remove the widget and still thinks it
should be running or something? I do recall that when I *did* have the
background service turned on, that it was monitoring every 10-15
minutes, about as often as I see the app re-appear.

If I can find any other pattern to it, I'll let you know.

As a feature request: It might also be nice to be able to have
configurable monitoring times; for example, I could set it to refresh
every hour during my work day (we monitor EC2 on our desktops during
our work day), but set it to every 15 minutes between 6pm and 7am or
something? Just an idea.

10 minutes later, Decaf is showing up in my Task killer again, along
with two other apps (Google Maps and T-Mobile's "My Account") which I
did not manually start. No SMS messages received in that time, but
other background tasks were triggered including Twitroid and
Flyscreen)
