What:  Discussion about People’s Durham’s summer organizing and leadership training program

Hello all, I hope that this finds you doing well.

Summer’s here!!!  Yay!!!

Okay, now that that’s done, let me get down to the task of this email.  After a long spring of meeting, flyer making, phone calling, public speaking, marching, and emailing, the Umbrella Coalition and all supporters of public education seem to be on the verge of a pretty significant victory (saving most, if not all, of the teacher positions that were slated to be cut in Durham county).  There’ll be more coming on this one, but I wanted to start this email with a recognition of the success that all of our hard work has brought.

But none of it would have happened without having a big enough group of people who understood the political situation, gotten a great group of folks in the room, and organized, organized, organized.  Hopefully, we’ve all learned a lot about how change happens in the process.  I know I have.  And now there’s an opportunity to learn more.

This summer, People’s Durham (the organization that initiated the process that led to the Umbrella Coalition), is organizing its FIRST-EVER summer leadership and organizer training program.  In it, we’ll be focusing on topics like:

  • How does the economy work?
  • How do race, class, gender, sexual identity, immigration status and other social identities that we have impact us, our society, and our organizing?
  • What is organizing?  Why do we do it?
  • What is the history of public schools and where are they headed?
  • How do we understand the tension between immigrant and African-American communities and work through it to build the alliances we need?

And skill-building and leadership development like:

  • How to have 1 on 1 conversations about political work
  • Media work
  • Group facilitation
  • Fundraising
  • Culture Work

And all of this will be done in a way that mixes classroom style instruction and discussion (utilizing all of our educator skills to match different people’s learning styles), practice in neighborhoods, on buses, at jobs, etc., and reflection.  And hopefully, we’ll leave the summer with some ideas about how to start building an organization that can fight for the public education we need.  Sound exciting?

If it does, we’d like you to join us THIS SATURDAY (June 19th) from 12-2 at a location to be determined for some lunch and a discussion about this awesome summer program.  At the meeting, People’s Durham will share some basic ideas that we have for the program, have some good discussion where we can get feedback and make adjustments if necessary, and make a plan to move forward.

Even if you are unsure of your summer plans, we’d still like you to come out and join the discussion.  It’s very possible that we’re going to be offering multiple different ways for people to engage, from movie nights to regular training sessions.  You don’t have to have been involved in the Umbrella Coalition.  You just have to be somebody who’s interested in making change, wants to learn a few new things, and wants to meet and build relationships with a group of really great people.

So let us know if you’d like to join us on Saturday.  We’ll be providing food, and childcare if necessary.

Looking forward to seeing you.  Please hit me back at bprof...@yahoo.com or (919) 210-9256 if you have questions or want more information.

Hey, Bry! I'm supportive and interested in helping out, but I'll be in Detroit setting up for the USSF at the time of this meeting. I'll come to the next one if the timing works out better. Looking forward to notes!
Peace,
Manju
