I want a good video game movie. There are so many good stories out there, so many good characters, images and worlds that it's almost absurd the way Hollywood has so consistently failed at adapting all of them. It sure hasn't stopped them from trying, though. The official Warcraft movie trailer debuted at Blizzcon today, and you can watch it above. It has a lot of people very excited, but alas, I'm not one of them. I had high hopes that this one might actually work, but this trailer fills me with dread. Warcraft as a movie looks like Game of Thrones meets The Land Before Time.
There are some great parts of this trailer: the environments look beautiful, it's always nice to see Ragnar Lothbrok around, and some of the CGI is really well executed. Otherwise, though, there's a serious clash between the absurd Warcraft aesthetic and the required scale of a Hollywood film. The orcs look a lot like their video game counterparts, but I just don't see how their overblown features are ever going to look natural next to actual human actors. Half of this movie is CGI, but I feel like they should either have done the whole thing that way or just used humans in makeup for the orcs. Warcraft, both the RTS and the MMO, revels in its own absurdity while still bringing a serious edge. That doesn't play nearly as well on the big screen -- The Avengers managed it, but it's a rare feat.
I asked my girlfriend to watch the trailer with me for an outside opinion: by the time the two minutes were up she had returned to her computer, and I don't really blame her. The trailer pre-supposes that you both know who Thrall is, and do not think that Thrall as orc baby looks dumb. If you don't already have an emotional connection with the Orcs and Humans of Azeroth, there's nothing really for you here. Then again, World of Warcraft did have 12 million subscribers at its peak in 2010, so there may not really be any need to sell tickets to outsiders.
During BlizzCon 2019, a new trailer for the next expansion for World of Warcraft, Shadowlands, was released. The trailer focuses on Sylvanas as she takes on Highlord Bolvar Fordragon, the Lich King. You can watch the trailer below.
In the trailer, Sylvanas journies to the Ice Crown Citadel and approaches the Frozen Throne, where Bolvar sits. As she approaches him, Bolvar's orange flames begin to glow with an icy blue and he rises to meet Sylvanas' challenge. The fight is pretty epic, but also fairly one-sided. As strong as Bolvar is, Sylvanas is just stronger. She ultimately takes him down, removes his crown, and chooses to destroy it. The act rips the sky open, raining hellfire on the ice-covered landscape. "This world is a prison," Sylvanas says with a grimace. "And I will set us all free."
In World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, death is coming for you so you have to journey to the place where no living soul has ever gone before: the Shadowlands--basically the afterlife of the Warcraft universe. On your journey, you'll encounter the Fallen, those who have died in the story up to this point, and learn what ultimately became of them.
In the Shadowlands, spirits go through a cycle of death and rebirth creating a new type of environment for WoW. In the new expansion, you'll journey to new zones like Revendreth, Ardenweald, Maldraxxus, and Bastion where you'll choose a covenant and engage in brand-new dungeons and raids. "Shadowlands is an expansion built around the agency of choice," game director Ion Hazzikostas said.
Each match is 10-15 minutes long and has 60 players per match, with the winner being the last one standing. Level up and acquire new abilities and spells by killing creatures and enemies, looting chests, and avoiding the encroaching storm.
Plunderstorm is perfect for pick-up and play! No expansion purchase is required, but a World of Warcraft Subscription or Game Time is needed to participate in a high-stakes, play-by-the-seat-your-pants match. This means that Classic players can also participate in a plethora of plundering fun by simply installing the modern (Live) World of Warcraft client:
Discover lootable spells, abilities, and upgrades as you plunder treasure chests and defeat enemies. Upon picking up, spells and abilities are automatically added to your Action Bar, with two slots dedicated to offensive skills and two for utilities such as leaps, speed boosts, and crowd-control.
Players can earn cosmetics, pets, titles, and mounts as they progress through the reward track. These include the majestic Polly Roger parrot mount, Bubbles the crab pet, swashbuckling cosmetics, 750 Trader's Tender from "Keg Leg's Crew" for use on the Trading Post, and more. 3 A victory is not required to claim the spoils of a well-fought fight.
To view Renown and apply the Plunderstorm weapon and transmog customizations, change titles, or summon pets, swabbies can click on Da'kash Grimledger standing directly in front of the spawn point in the Plunderstorm lobby.
Customization unlocks are simultaneously unlocked for Dragonflight characters and can be found in your Collection. Each Renown level unlock is noted in colored text under the reward name, whether the reward is for Dragonflight, Plunderstorm, or Classic.
