This is a case from Los Angeles in the 1980s. The Institute for Historical Review, an antisemitic group which

denies the Holocaust, advertised in local newspapers an award of $50,000 for anyone who could prove Jews were gassed at Auschwitz Concentration Camp. Mel Mermelstein, a survivor of the camp, accepted the challenge and the case wound up in court when the IHR reneged on their promise to pay.
