A really great article by Holland Cotter in the New York Times... sums up a lot of what we've been saying for some time now. Happy to read it here.

"Why aren’t museums telling that story? Because it doesn’t sell. Why doesn’t it sell? Because it’s unfamiliar. Why is it unfamiliar? Because museums, with their eyes glued to box office, aren’t telling the story."

Jim, you're right he doesn't open up the whole can of worms- and I think that in contrast, one of the good things OM did is not separate this critique from Capitalism in general.  But the article has some passion behind it.  Unfortunately, it would be a totally different matter if it was written by Robert Smith.  Holland Cotter has been the "lefty" critic at Times for a long time and is the one who seems to always write about artists of color, political art, gay artists, etc. I think the market just ignores him but listens to Smith, who I think is a good writer, but always plays the canon game.

I like Cotter but he seems to be missing the bigger picture. The art market is a subset of the world market and though I don't expect him to acknowledge OWS or OM, the stratification in the art world reflects global economy of rising inequality, which he alludes to but won't directly address.

And there are a hell of a lot of students who will never pay off their student loans if things continue as they are.

And aren't we in the third or fourth generation of postmodernism?

But its a positive step in the right direction that he actually published this in the Times, the paper of record, the champion of the status quo. Do they still use all the news that's fit to print on their website?
