In1983 I had the great good fortune of meeting and studying with Dr. Vasant Lad along with senior teachers of Ayurveda, namely Dr. David Frawley and Dr. Robert Svoboda at the Ayurvedic Instutute in Albuquerque, New Mexico until 1987. I have a thorough understanding of the principles of Life and Living according to this ancient Science from India. I incorporate these principles into all my teachings. Krishnamachariya and Pattabhi Jois were advocates of this method of lifestyle and teaching in everything they taught as well.
Along with this I have studied extensively with Master teachers in the Arts of Tantra, Meditation (Surat Shabd Yoga/The Yoga of connection to the Sound Current) Herbology, Acupuncture/Chi Gong, Pranayama, Fasting/Cleansing, Iridology, Shiatsu Massage, Pancha Karma, and other forms of Hatha Yoga (Iyengar/Krishnamachariya).
Today I am blessed with having the Ashtanga Yoga Bali Research Center with my loving wife Radha. AYBRC is a culmination of our combined energy from our devoted practice and teaching of the traditional method of Ashtanga Yoga and the Vedic Science of Ayurveda to thousands of students around the Globe. I am forever grateful for this opportunity to share with you what I have learned and continue to learn.
Anthony Carlisi is a wonderful teacher of Ashtanga yoga. His many years of practice and study have given him a very deep understanding of Ashtanga. He approaches from a place of profound spirituality and connection with the true purpose of the practice and what it is supposed to achieve. His experience deepens the students experience. He helps to align the mind with the physical body through his teachings. The asanas are quickly strengthened under his tutelage. He is also very knowledgeable about Ayurvedic medicine which I believe gives him more insight into the body/mind/spirit connection. Practicing with Anthony immediately connects one with the true depth and meaning of this very special form of yoga.
Anthony was my first yoga teacher and gave me the ideal starting course; he was patient and kind and really took the time to explain things. I was deeply suspicious when I started but that suspicion soon evaporated. He is a lovely guy and a great teacher, and everyone would benefit from taking lessons with him.
It is an honor to write this recommendation for Anthony Carlisi. We began practicing Ashtanga Yoga together in 1978, in Encinitas, California, when Nancy Gilgoff and I brought K. Pattabhi Jois, to America for the second time. Anthony and I have been friends ever since. Anthony has a sterling reputation for consciously and carefully teaching the Ashtanga Yoga method to students of all levels, from elementary to advanced. I solidly support Anthony in all of his endeavors as he spreads our knowledge and love for Ashtanga Yoga throughout the world.
Unfortunately Dan hurt his big toe just a few days before the actual Games in 2000. I felt he was definitely on his way to a second Gold Medal. Most importantly Dan lives his life like the champion that he is.
Prem has been my primary teacher of Ashtanga for the 5 past years when he gave me my first lesson. I had a little yoga experience before, but with Prem, the practice became so much more real for me! Teaching it in a phase, form and manner that made me relax more. No dogma, just pure Yoga from a gangster of the spirit. I consider him a good friend and brother from another mother.
Anthony Carlisi brings a twenty year long study and practice of Ayurvedic medicine into his teaching of yoga. This provides him much insight into yogic healing and yoga therapy, which few yoga teachers today can claim. It makes him one of the most important Yoga teachers in the world for integrating an Ayurvedic approach to Yoga practice, which will probably be the cutting edge of Yoga for the future.
All packages include accommodation, full board, dives including a guide or instructor as well as equipment. If you book your diving retreat through Neue Wege they will also include your flight as well as airport transfers.
In addition, you can do meditation and yoga classes in the morning, have a post-dive pranayama session, and do sunset yoga every day. Depending on the package you choose there are also various activities included that range from waterfall visits to a sunrise dolphin cruise.
What makes Zen the perfect diving resort in Bali: you have all that you need for a relaxing holiday right at your fingertips. This way you can simply roll out of bed in the morning, do yoga just a few steps from your room overlooking the ocean before a coffee to-go and transfer awaits to your dive site.
For longer trips, the crew will prepare a takeaway breakfast or lunch for you and take care of things like water, towels, and park fees where applicable. All you will need is your bathing suit, reef-friendly sunscreen, and your camera.
My yoga and scuba diving retreat went a little differently as I also got to try some of their Ayurvedic treatments while I was there. Neue Wege had organized a 4 nights/ 5 days package for certified divers for me. Since I was the only diver at the time, I got to modify the itinerary to my liking after chatting to Gede.
We dove at the Underwater Cave and Coral Garden, two beautiful dive sites with walls covered in fan corals. The Underwater Cave is easy to access even for non-cave divers and home to a few electric clams.
My final day of diving took us to Tulamben. I had missed out on diving the Liberty Wreck and Amed due to being ill before so I was excited to go now. Zen Resorts does diving in Tulamben a little differently. You will leave the resort at 4 am (yes, you can take your pillow!) to be on the east coast and ready to dive by 6 am just in time for sunrise. This way you will usually avoid any crowds at the USAT Liberty, the wreck the area is so famous for.
The wreck itself was beautiful though due to the waves we were struggling with bad visibility. We decided afterward to scrap our second dive in the area and instead headed to calmer shores in Lovina.
There are plenty of activities for you to partake once you get out of the water at Zen. You can read all about their complete wellness program in this post. A highlight for me was the dolphin cruise on the last day. Unlike other tours, Zen organizes their cruises to start way before sunrise. Being on a boat, gliding over the dark ocean, and finally greeting the sun is all part of it. When I was told that I had to get up at 4.30 am again, I rebelled and arranged to be picked up an hour later. To be honest, I found it slightly unnerving being alone on a boat with the captain in the dark ocean. At least for a little while until the sun was coming up and we started to look for dolphins.

Dear Bali Yoga school, thank you very much for the great retreat stay in Ubud. We felt very comfortable in the beautiful rooms with the great garden and the excellent pool. The food was vegan, fresh and healthy, really tasty!!! I loved it. The yoga teachers were very well trained and friendly and we took a lot of yoga knowledge home with us. Our host Dewa was always ready to meet all our needs. He helps us with the Visa and everything.(Thank you very much ) The whole team has always tried to ensure our satisfaction. We had a good time in Ubud and would go back anytime! Thank you. Namaste
Like most places I visited in Northern India, cows and monkeys abound. (And due to the cows, tons of cow pies and flies). Another thing to note is that Rishikesh is a meat- and alcohol-free city, so no post-yoga happy hours while in Rishikesh.
Ubud is the landlocked cultural hub of Bali. A small city, Ubud is chock-full of art galleries, yoga studios, and healthy cafs. It has become much more touristy since the Eat Pray Love phenomenon, but I still found it easy to meet locals and get around without too many touts.
I did my Yoga Teacher Training at Vinyasa Yoga School in Rishikesh. I loved the instructors but was not fond of the management- every time we voiced a concern, it fell upon deaf ears. Also the owner tried to get us to pay under the table which was shady, needless to say. The hotel where we stayed was passably nice but the power went out 10-15 times a day (no joke) and there was no AC.
The choice is simple. Bali. Offset the extra cost by providing AW Bali Yoga lessons to trip supporters near you upon your return. For instance, $100 for 4 one hour classes upon your return. $200 gets 10. Good for 1 year. Be sure to make & provide refreshing iced tea from Bali after each class to your students. If you are in New York, I would get it.
Good post, but this comparison is a bit apples and oranges. India has Yoga courses that range from inexpensive to very expensive, and while the Yoga you learn there is all good generally, it is location, scenery, accommodation, decor, food and other luxuries that make up the higher cost at the expensive ones. We get what we pay for, and there is no dearth of options in India, which is good, because people like me who cannot afford to spend much can still go there and learn Yoga. I think a better way to compare would be to pick schools that cost the same in US dollars, both in India and Bali, and see what you get for that.
