new to debian -- no sound!

hi im new to debian... i run windows xp and mandrake w/o any
problems...
debian is another story of course, but im interested in getting this
up!

i finally got it installed and running with the x windows system,
finally got my mouse working correctly (throught xf86conf-4) but i see
no way to get sound.
im obviously a newb.
help?

you can figure that one from mandrake's setup by inspecting /proc/sound
and such...
BTW this forum seems to get very little traffic, compared to linux.debian.user.
