I just installed debian ppc 2.2r6 on a iMac 350mhz slot loading.
I haven't installed the X Window system because I want to learn
the use of the shell first. (I think I'm using bash, is that a
good choice?).
Debian is my sole OS right now, so I can't access MacOS and I need
to shift the screen area of my monitor a little bit on the right
because it's a little too far on the left and I can't see the first
2 or maybe 3 columns.
How can I accomplish this? I used to have buttons on the monitor
of my i386 pc, but I can't any of those on the iMac.
more..
During installation while booting the cd media I got some messages
saying Bad Partition Signature.
To partition the hd, dbootstrap offered me mac-fdisk.
So I opened up a shell on virtual console 2 and typed cfdisk cause
that's the tool I used to use back in the dos days but i got a message
in the bottom of the screen saying FATAL ERROR - BAD PARTITION
SIGNATURE.
Pretty much the same problem as the one I got at boot time.
So I used mac-fdisk and 1st of all i printed the partition table.
I had a partition for the partition map, 4 other small partitions for
the drivers (they all were recognized by the system as either Apple or
Macintosh partitions), one more small partition called the patch
partitions (unknown to the system).
Finally the large HFS partition used by MacOS and a little extra free
space.
I noticed the mac-fdisk wouldn't let me erase the partion map
partition (obviously), neither the ones with the drivers.
What drivers are in there? Do I really need them now?
mac-fdisk would let me erase the patch partition, but I obviously
didn't in the end. Does somebody now what is this one for? Shouls I
erase it or not?
So with all these partitions, I ended up with swap space on hda9 and
root partition on hda10!
Is this similar to YOUR partitioning scheme?
Anyway the installation process was succesfull in the end.
Everything seems to be working fine.
Thanks for your patience,
Andrea
