not get this into woody?

I agree, although it is a superficial change, it does give it a bit more character.

Why not add this into something like linuxlogo (an ASCII Debian swirl USED
to be in there prior to potato being released). That way, default stays
small, simple, and linuxlogo when installed creates something nice, like it
used to. Just an idea.

It's merely a bummer waiting for your fsck to finish fsck'ing 1GB when
stdout goes at that speed...

To make it really portable use tput. That way you can get some
kind of emphasis on most terminals without annoying the users of
vt420 terminals (like me) or other exotic terminals.

Doesn't it look just like the one in 'linuxlogo'?
Maybe we should make 'linuxlogo' standart
(and set 'on login', not 'on boot' by default)

I'll add this to linuxlogo.

What exactly can happen?

I have a bug report on joe about this, #42631, but as yet nobody has told me
how exactly is that bad security-wise, see the bug log. :(

happened once to me, in my younger days when I was still a student,
and had a file full of words of dubious politeness in my home
directory.

One of my classmates sent me a message which consisted (more or less)
of following:

From: His Name <ANSI for go to beginning of line>From: Sysadmin's Name
Message: Come immediately to my office, reason: insulting file in
your home directory

needless to say, I was more than a bit embarrassed (and so was the
sysadmin when I went to him and tried to explain why the file is there) :-)

Well, joe displays ^[ in bold when it's in a file you edit, but it doesn't
filter the file names. So for example if you edit a file called ^[[30m it
will display some of its interface in black, but that's about it.

What truely evil thing can be done with this? :)

Have you ever heard of an ANSI bomb? Through escape sequences, you can
redefine other escape sequences.

http://totse.com/en/viruses/virus_information/ab2.html

Shows some exploitation possibilities. Baically, you can use the escape
characters to execute an alias command on localhost. Most ANSI bombing
was done in DOS, so privileges weren't a big issue, but I assume that a
suitably obscene ANSI bomb could remap enough to screw a user over big
time: alias ls to rm -r for example.
