Hi Debezium Gurus,

We are considering the use of Debezium to replicate our entire Oracle database and capture table level events and process them. We are on Oracle 19c. I understand that two options exist and I am yet to understand under what circumstances one would chose "XStream" and pay the license fees for Golden Date if LogMiner can do the same work.

Has anyone used the Oracle Connector with Logminer or XStream on Oracle 19c? What are the drawbacks in not setting up with XStream?

Apologies if this is a simple question and the answers are well documented already. Please bear with me and direct me to the relevant document.

Thanks and Regards

Bala Sethuram

Hi Bala -

I would say the choice really boils down to whether you have a GoldenGate license already and whether your DBA team has taken the liberty to install and configure GoldenGate.  There are some users of the connector who have the license but simply don't use GoldenGate for various reasons. There are some users who despite having the license and having it installed chose to use LogMiner as a way to evaluate whether they can move away from Xstream and GoldenGate for other reasons.

As for drawbacks, I would say there really aren't any.  The LogMiner implementation provides a bit more detailed information in the source information block for each change than Xstream, but this is mostly due to the fact that Xstream doesn't propagate all details from the underlying LogMiner process but we can obtain that when using the LogMiner API directly.

If you have any specific questions, let me know as I'd be happy to answer them.

Thanks,
Chris
