The Global Debates are a year-long initiative developed to give high school students and their teachers an opportunity to actively participate and initiate public discussion around critical international issues. It is also a platform to exchange views and share course of action that needs to be taken around the world to combat these issues. The initiative consists of 2 campaigns taking place from October to December and from February to April. The main theme for the school year 2010/2011 is international migration, which is also the main theme for the 2011 IDEA Youth Forum in Istanbul.
Any U.S. or international high school (grades 9-12, ages 14-19) can participate in the Global Debates. In the past 3 years we had schools in more than 90 countries participate in the Global Debates. Make sure you and your community are represented this year too!
For seventeenth time in row IDEA and its partners will host 250 young people from over 40 countries of the world at its annual summer event - the IDEA Youth Forum. 2011 IDEA Youth Forum is organized by International Debate Education Association (IDEA) in cooperation with Doga Colleges, Turkish Debate Association and Open Society Foundations – Youth Initiative. It will take place form July 19 to August 1, 2010 in Istanbul, Turkey. This year we will focus even more on increasing the diversity and supporting cultural exchange, by offering substantial and diversified financial aid for debaters and coaches from all around the world. One of the selection criteria to become a YF participant will be motivation to attend the event and to impact the world around us. One
of the ways is to join the Global Debates, so increase your chances of being selected and join the Global debates now!
And why join the the Global Debates and the Youth Forum?
here is a testimony from Dani, one of our past participants: There are bad guys and there are good guys. The bad
guys cannot stand dissenting opinions. I was faced with people who
history tells me not to like. And we debated with each other in one team
without knowing our countries of origin. Later on my teammate asked me
where I came from. I replied “Kosovo”. She was in utter shock for a few
seconds. Only later on I realized she was from Serbia. The idea that
you are meeting and debating together with persons from different often
controversial background is amazing.
Everybody who is a debater is also an activist. Because once you get
into the world of debate you just cannot stop. I would recommend it to
anyone. Debate will influence your life in a positive way. It has
changed my life and the life of my friends. It will change yours, I
assure you.
Ramadan (Dani) Ilazi finished his degree in sociology at a university in Kosovo. He has been been a debate-team champion, won scholarships to study civics in the U.S., Slovenia and Bulgaria. Dani and his family has been forced to flee at the times of ethnic cleansing in Kosovo. Today he leads an organization called Levizja FOL (Speak Out), which not only holds public figures accountable by exposing their mistakes, but also educates people about their civic responsibilities via the means of debate.
