Dear Convenor,
I, Abhishek Shrestha, on behalf of Team Nepal, would like to apply for the bursary for WSDC, Dundee.
Debate in Nepal is still in a nascent phase and we have had little participation at International debate competitions.
WSDC format debating is still in its infancy in Nepal. The Nepalese culture misconceives debating as public speaking. WSDC is very new debate format in Nepal which is getting popular now a days among high school students in Nepal. Earlier, debate used to take place in traditional Nepali format. We've come a long way, but we still have a long road to travel. So far there have been few debate workshops and a couple of competitions. Participating in WSDC will help Team Nepal to acquire knowledge, experience and skills in debating. It is also an opportunity for the attendees to learn from the participants of different countries and effectively contribute to the global debating culture.
Nepal is one of the least developed countries and the average Nepali earns less than 2 USD daily. Its very hard for us to cover the registration cost for the competition. Though we have been constantly approaching different national and international corporate houses, NGOs and INGOs, the response we get is not very encouraging. Since there are more basic problems in the nation, debating does not fall under the criteria of social development, hence we are having a hard time fund raising the registration amount. The only positive response that we have acquired as of yet is hardly sufficient for the travel cost only, let alone the registration fee. We have also not given up on fund raising; we will be approaching for supporters and sponsors in the future as well.
At present, Nepal is a critical stage and is facing serious problems ranging from political instability, social and economic problem, border encroachment and youth migration. More than 50% of the country population is youth and empowering youth and building their capacity in debate will help to start dialogue on various issues, having a wide and far impact on Nepali youth.
Also, after returning from the competition, the participants will go to different parts of Nepal to teach about debate and WSDC format. Since WSDC is an international platform, the up coming youths will be higly enthusiastic about the future events. The participation of the Nepalese team in the event will boost knowledge about WSDC format debating in Nepal.
There have been a few mentionable initiatives by us, adressing the major issues here, but because of lack of resources, it has been limited to Kathmandu region only. If there were to be properly trained human resourse here in Nepal, the reach of Debating would be more diverse. You will be supporting a team that will work towards empowering their youth communities and their country as a whole. We assure you that you will not regret your decision of letting us participate with the Bursary. Team Nepal will perform to its best.
Nepalese team participation will not be limited to Dundee, but the selected team members will work to empower the regional youth in debating upon their return.
Hoping for a positive response.
Regards,
Dear bursary applicants
I’m sorry I have not taken the time to respond to each of you individually on receipt; we have been snowed under with e-mails asking all sorts of stuff and have been doing our best reply to requests for info.
Thank you very much for your application. I should inform you that with 2 hours to go till the close of registration the tournament is quite over-subscribed, with some nations having indicated that they still intend to register. It looks as though we shall be undertaking a big juggling act over the weekend to see how many people we can fit in, and some are going to be disappointed.
I shall be back in touch as soon as possible to let you know of the outcome of your bursary application.
I would ask you thereafter please to advise me as soon as you can whether
All best wishes
Irene McGrathDear Convenor,
