there is a disturbing pornographic popup or advertisement of some kind on the home page ... should that be there? if not, how can we get rid of it?

It's not showing up on my computer. Are you sure it's actually from
Google Groups and not your computer? If you've been a malicious
website, it's possible that you picked up a virus. It's happened to
me before.

It shows up on my end also. I know for certain its not from a virus or
malware or anything like that, and this computer hasn't ever been on a
porn site. (I'm at work ;)

Hm. Well, regardless, group owners have no control over Google's
advertising. I can delete spam threads and things that get posted to
the files section, but the actual advertising is out of my hands. I
suggest a popup blocker. A very good one comes standard with Firefox.
