Invitation for Omerta- The Mafia Crisis Committee at Colloquium '15, NSIT

Respected Sir/Ma'am,

 

The Debating Society of NSIT (Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology), Delhi University cordially invites you to Omerta, a crisis committee to be held under its annual debating and literary festival- Colloquium 2015, on 29th March 2015.

 

Omerta

 

Omerta is a crisis committee based in 1930s New York. 

 

The Castellammarese War was a bloody power struggle for control of the Italian-American Mafia that took place in 1930. The victor of the war declared himself to be the undisputed leader of the entire Mafia. However, he was soon murdered in turn by a faction of young upstarts, who established a power-sharing arrangement called "The Commission," a group of five Mafia families of equal stature, to avoid such wars in the future.

In the volatile time after the Castellammarese War, in the time of Prohibition, different stakeholders, from the Bosses to the Senators to the most dangerous hitmen in New York, gather at one place and decide the territories and businesses of the five different crime families of the city. Omerta will be a simulation of this gathering.

 

 

Structure of the Committee:

 

 1. The committee will have opening statements by every stakeholder. There will be formal and informal sessions modelled around moderated and unmoderated caucuses. 

 

2. Each stakeholder will be given documents prior to the starting of the committee, which will contain certain secret agendas that they need to fulfill during the committee. These secret agendas will often clash with each other, and it is upto each stakeholder to ensure that the objectives listed in his or her agenda are achieved. The stakeholders shall be marked on the fulfilment of the above-mentioned secret agendas. During the informal sessions participants have to lobby and may collude to accomplish their secret mission.

 

3. There will be constant crisis updates throughout the day.

An equitable distribution of power after The Castellammarese War between the Mafia Families of NY.

The Background Guide will be released two weeks prior to the day of the event.     

 

The Chairperson for Omerta will be Bhavya Vashishth, a highly acclaimed MUNer. Bhavya has presided as Chair over some of the most prestigious MUNs in the country.
