Greetings!

It is with great pleasure that the Debating Society of Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology brings to you the third edition of its Annual Debating and Literary Festival, Colloquium 2015 to be held from 27th to 29th March, 2015.

After the mad success of last year’s edition, we’ve decide to expand on our events, duration, and more importantly, our prize money.

Featuring multiple panel discussions among a plethora of new events, this year’s festival is aimed at raising the bar when it comes to interaction between young enthusiasts and eminent personalities, and strives to take literary indulgence to a whole new level.

And while we are aware that Bangalore has some brilliant weather around the time, we urge societies to consider the prize money at stake and the fact that as a festival still establishing itself, you can count on us to put in that extra bit of work required to make it a 3-day extravaganza of hard-hitting, eye-opening mind spaces.

With that in mind, the list of events at Colloquium 2015:

PANEL DISCUSSIONS:

This year’s festival is centred around the theme “The Rising Tide”, and features a panel discussion on the topic “'Science, for God’s Sake - Tracing the journey from conflict to conversation”, which aims at exploring life’s most fundamental questions; for instance “how did the universe come into existence?”, “Are Science and God fated to forever be irreconcilable opponents?”, “Are these discrete realms of knowledge capable of co-existing?” and so on.

Next up, we have an interactive discussion, '50 Shades of Feminism - A discourse on the coexistence of feminism and pornography', which aims to cross the borders of taboo-ism and create a space, conducive to talk about the moralistic considerations pornography engenders, and raises the question of whether pornography can coexist with feminism.

Far too many times have we complained about our inhibitions, the myopic mindset of our society and the limitations that stem from this mindset. We know this to be true, and for that very reason we offer a challenge to the confines of our understanding and consciousness, and are here to debate upon the ambit of these very subconscious boundaries.

NSITMUN’15 :

The admiration of the Delhi MUN circuit and the enthusiasm of its participation is our lifeblood, and we’re back with our 4th edition to send another brilliant experience your way! The committees to be simulated at the conference are as follows:

General Assembly: SPECPOL

The media is essential to any democracy, and a democratic election is impossible without the media. A free and fair election is not only about the freedom to vote and the knowledge of how to cast a vote, but also about a participatory process where voters engage in public debate and have adequate information about parties, policies, candidates and the election process itself in order to make informed choices.

HSC

Israel’s decisive victory in the Six-Day War, also called June War or Third Arab-Israeli War, included the capture of the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, West Bank, Old City of Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights; the status of these territories has subsequently become a major point of contention in the Arab-Israeli conflict.

ECOSOC: HLPCR

Multiple intractable conflicts have been polluting MENA(Middle East and North African) region interstate relationships during the recent decades and the high level panel seeks to identify and resolve the socio-economic spillovers that have been created by the conflicts in the MENA region for the rest of the world.

Futuristic NATO 2030

Oil and gas are more valuable today than ever with everyone wishing to safeguard their respective futures. NATO states need to “dig deeper” and enter into regions such as Central and South East Asia – the traditional domains of Russia and China respectively

INDIAN PARLIAMENTARY COLLOQUIUM

The Indian Parliamentary Colloquium aims to have a debate not bound by strict rules of procedure or by the depth of research, driven to question and argue the inherent logic instead of facts. This year, it will simulate the following two committees :

IBADAT KHANA

The new benevolent dictator of Hindoostan in 2015 is realizing the idea of collective social harmony through philosophical discussions between religious representatives on the revived Ibadat Khana platform, to form a Uniform Civil Code.

JUDGEMENT DAY

A debate with a unique take on the proceedings of a court that revolves around the sole premise - What would happen in the absence of a penal code? What if the only reference you have to issue a ruling is the arguments presented to you by both sides? The aim here being to convince the jury that your position is the ‘right stand to take’. Eliminating absolutes, both sides are given a free reign to work around the concepts of ‘rationality’, as well as ‘morality’.The legality of things, however, becomes completely immaterial and the arguments must then be formed and sufficiently analysed, using the social norms and beliefs that influenced the formation of the same.

Each team would comprise of two members. They would be provided with a detailed case and a day to prepare their stand. There will be opening and closing statements as well as cross-questioning from both sides.

On the same theme, in an excerpt from one of his best works, Oscar Wilde writes : “The only way to get rid of temptation is to yield to it.”

Which popular novel are we talking about? ID X?

Clear it, and you will move on to a battle of ‘survival of the fittest’, where you get to play a character, fictional or not, and present a case for your survival in a perilous situation, in an attempt to win the approval of the audience.
