Inprint Margarett Root Brown Reading Series

The Inprint Margaret Root Brown Reading Series presents one of the finalists of the 2010 National Book Award - Peter Carey - January 24th at 7:30 at the Alley Theatre. Parrot and Olivier in America  is Carey's 11th novel - two of which won the prestigious Mann Booker Prize.  He is only the second writer to have won the award twice.  Tickets are $5.00,  and doors open at 6:45. The author will be available to sign his books after the presentation.

 Author Visit at Houston Public Library


A special presentation featuring author Thomas C. Holt will be held at the Houston Public Library Saturday, January 15th from 2:00 - 4:00.  Holt will present information from his book, Children of Fire: A History of African Americans.  Holt is the James Westfall Thompson Professor of American and African American History at the University of Chicago. A past president of the American Historical Association, Holt has been a Fellow of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the Woodrow Wilson International Center, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

PBS NewsHour Extra: Teacher Center

PBS NewsHour Extra uses the standards and resources of the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer that airs at 6:00 pm. Monday through Friday on our local PBS station, Channel 8.  The purpose of the site is "to provide students and teachers with quality educational resources based on current issues and events."  The sites utilizes student voices, lesson plans and video to enhance instruction in all subject areas.  Students can submit stories and videos that are archived on the site along with the stories done by professionals.
