Summer Reading Article

This is the time of year when teachers, departments, and entire school districts are considering the titles that will be placed on summer reading lists.  An article in School Library Journal, "Flip Summer Reading: What to do About Those Tired, Required Reading Lists," encourages teachers and librarians to rethink the summer reading list based on the purpose of student reading in the summer.  Are students reading to complete an assignment?  To increase the number of classics they read?  To improve SAT vocabulary?  To mitigate the the decline in reading levels that sometimes occurs in the summer?  Or perhaps to read for pleasure?

This timely article offers some suggestions for making summer reading more relevant and interesting for students.

I loved my friend.
He went away from me.
There is nothing more to say.
The poem ends,
soft as it began, -
I loved my friend.
