October is National Adopt a Shelter Animal Month!

Come meet Lizzy  -- the Houston Human Society mascot -- in the library during lunch October 17th and learn about all of the benefits of animal adoption.

BOOK FAIR

We launch Teen Read Week - October 13 - 17 - with our annual Book Fair. You may schedule your classes to view the fair as a group or drop in before school, after school, or during lunch. Now is the time to think about Christmas gifts for yourself and your family. Encourage your students to visit the fair and purchase a book to read for pleasure.

The Texas Book Festival begins Saturday, October 24th and runs through the weekend.  The festival, founded by Laura Bush in 1995, offers a stellar lineup of authors from Texas, the nation, and around the world.  The festival takes place at the Capitol Building in Austin, but includes a Lit Crawl that features authors and activities all around the downtown Austin area. The festivities also include food and book vendors, live music, artists and cooking demonstrations, and more.  All  events are free and open to the public.

Library Video Collection

The library purchases very few videos per year because of our access to digital resources. Teachers have access to Discovery Education Streaming Video as well as TeacherTube and other other online videos. Discovery Education is available by subscription from the District and requires a password and ID.  All teachers must provide the School Passcode (4138-6E7C), then create a user name and password.  The District also provides a social studies (ABC-CLIO) and a literary (Gale) database among many others.  All of these resources can be accessed through the Library webpage http://www.debakeyhslibrary.org --  Teacher Resources.

If you have been planning to use Google Forms for surveying or testing student, dottotech has a very easy-to understand series of YouTube instructional videos.  Google Forms - Google Drive's Hidden Gem will provide beginners the motivation to get started.  Videos can be embedded in forms for testing and/or discussion, much like the TED-Ed  program.
