Spring Semester Reading Program
The library is promoting the YALSA Reading List for this program, and it is a great time to share your reading interests with your students. This list of young adult titles is chosen by the Young Adult Division of the American Library Association. When students acquire 50 points in the Scholastic Reading Counts Program, we will create a reading poster of the student with their favorite book. We want teachers to participate as well, and you don't have to take a test! Please support the program by providing some class time for reading.
The Margarett Root Brown Series presents two award-winning poets for their reading series February 23rd at 7:30 at Wortham Theater. Books can be purchased in advance at Brazos Book Store or purchased and signed on site. Tickets are $5.00.
Read Across America Day March 2
The library celebrates the birth of Dr. Seuss by hosting a read-in March 2nd. The library invites teachers to schedule their classes for 30-minutes periods. Just be sure all students have something to read before they arrive in the library.
Student Internet Searching As our school moves closer to 1:1 computing, teachers may want to take a closer look at more efficient Internet searching. Google and other search engines may provide too much information, advertising, tracking and other distractions. Consider SweetSearch, which is a search engine designed specifically for students. The students are limited to 35,000 web pages that have been evaluated by research experts and considered to have sound educational value. SweetSearch2Day is a "this day in history" curated page that provides pictures of the day, word of the day and other types of information that can be used for warm-up activities or other types of conversation starters.
