Ms. Khan, our gifted and talented art teacher, has graciously agreed to teach the basics of  Adobe Photoshop to teachers and students during the month of November in the library.  Classes will be held during first lunch November 4, 11, and 18.  If you have ever wanted to create unique posters, pamphlets, banners, etc., come to the library for this personalized, hands-on training.

EBooks

The library eBook collection continues to expand.  Our latest collection is called Follett Shelf and can be accessed through the DeBakey Virtual Library www.debakeyhslibrary.org.  You will be pleasantly surprised at the variety in this collection.  As you consider titles for summer reading and reading during the semester, take a look at Follett Shelf.    Students are able to read the books in their browsers, so the books are available to all students at all times.   Remember that the user name for these digital resources is 'houstonisd', and the password is 'astros.'

November is National Novel Writing Month.  For anyone who has ever planned to write a novel, now is the time.  Your challenge is to write daily and produce a finished product by the end of the month. Never fear, there is plenty of help and encouragement available at http://nanowrimo.org/.

Article of Interest

Read Books. Every Day. Mostly for Pleasure. by Tim Pruzinsky.  This article, from the English Journal of the National Council of Teachers of English, has many suggestions for including independent reading into the English classroom, but these strategies can be useful for any curriculum. These strategies are also compatible with our current literacy plans.  Mostly, Pruzinsky posits that "Not giving students time to read in class is a bit like a basketball coach expecting his or her players to hit a bunch of free throws in a row without ever working on the skill in practice."  The author further maintains that if teachers give students time to read, the benefits will include better performance in the classroom, on test scores, and success in college.

Margarett Root Brown Reading Series

Michael Cunningham, the winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, will read from his new novel, The Snow Queen, Monday, November 10, at 7:30 at the Wortham Center.
