Hello Deathbomb Friends!

Last newsletter of the year! But don't be sad. Next week is the first
newsletter of 2012! Woohoo! Anyway, this one i particularly wordy, so
I'll just send you this video greeting card of holiday cheer before we
get started: http://vimeo.com/34184287

1. What did we do this year?
2. What did Foot Village do this year?
3. What did Captain Ahab do this year?
4. Our favorite music of 2011
5. Will 2012 be "cool"?

1. What did we do this year?
----------------------------------------------
Probably the biggest accomplishment at Deathbomb this year was
completing the first year of the Digital Singles Club. Despite a few
delays and a couple band switches, we not only delivered 52 singles,
but got an incredible response as well. It definitely felt like an
experiment, exploring the grey area between being a record label, an
mp3 blog, and a door-to-door milkman. In the end it truly was a way to
share more new music with people than we've ever been able to before,
and at an incredibly low price. This would not have been possible
without the dedication of Mario Zoots who made new art each week, all
the bands that contributed, and mostly all the subscribers. Thank you
everyone! For anyone that missed out on the weekly delivery of these
singles, you can still get instant access to all of them at
http://deathbombarc.bigcartel.com/product/deathbomb-digital-singles-club

The year began with releasing a cassette by Pariah Carey called
'Haokah'. The only physical release this year, it is also one of my
favorite cassettes Deathbomb has ever had the honor of releasing. The
soundtrack to Conan the Barbarian when aliens remake it on a planet
lightyears from here. The artwork is stunning as well. Still a few
copies available at: http://deathbombarc.bigcartel.com/product/pre-sale-pariah-carey-haokah-cassette

The year ended with a free online release by Back To The Future The
Ride. A collection of rarities, singles, and comp tracks called
'Chatroom Enhancing Drugs'. This also marks the final release from the
act before a name change to True Neutral. The animated artwork by
Peter Burr is not only gorgeous, but also a signifier of the level of
presentation Deathbomb is aiming for with future online releases. Not
sure if you got the memo, but we don't think it is adequate to just
shit out a medifire link into the world. Album art has always been a
portal into the world of sound, and the internet makes the
possibilities for this even wider. Check out this album at:

2. What did Foot Village do this year?
---------------------------------------------------------
2010 was a slow year for the band, but in 2011 Foot Village toured
three times. A Western States tour in the Spring. An UK/EU tour in the
summer. And an Eastern States tour in the Fall. Then a pair of shows
with Avey Tare & Drawlings here in California to finish things up.
Foot Village also played ATP fests for the first time, both in London
and in New Jersey. If you weren't able to make it to any of these
shows, or just want a walk down memory lane, there are two videos that
stand out as documentation for this year's live actions:

Pitchfork did a video interview / live performance film with the band:
http://www.pitchfork.com/features/the-out-door/8718-closing-the-books/4/
Bowlegs filmed Foot Village playing a new song called "This Song is a
Drug Deal". That vid and links to some other UK/EU documentation are
at: http://footvillage.org/featured/new-song-debut-east-coast-tour-dates

Fat Cat records released a Foot Village / Super Khoumeissa split 12"
over the summer. Foot Village's contribution is single 16+ min song
the serves as a miniature album in its own right. Copies are still
available and you can also hear the song for free at:
http://deathbombarc.bigcartel.com/product/foot-village-super-khoumeissa-split-12-pre-order
In my humble opinion, this is the shining star of Foot Village's
recorded output.

3. What did Captain Ahab do this year?
---------------------------------------------------------
Captain Ahab did a full US tour plus visited the EU twice. All these
trips in support of multiple versions of their album 'The End of
Irony'. There is, of course, the US version of the album that we put
out in 2010 (actually two different versions we put out as vinyl and
cd are different track listings). But there is also the Australian
edition. Technically out in 2010 as well I think (a december
release?), but still one of my favorite albums of 2011. Released by
Dualplover. In any case, all these different versions available at:
http://deathbombarc.bigcartel.com/category/theendofirony

Captain Ahab dropped three music videos in 2011!
The first one was "Little Hands" directed by Cristina Bercovitz:
http://www.captain-ahab.com/media/little-hands-music-video
Then two new ones came out on the same day! One for "The Kingdom of
Light" directed by Lawrence Klein: http://vimeo.com/28328973 and the
other for "Girls Gone Wild" directed by Patrick Kennelly: http://vimeo.com/29162430

Another fun Ahab video is from their performance at WFMU. This was
done while their tour included a puppet show (also by Cristina
Bercovitz): http://vimeo.com/23237027

And also not to be overlooked is Captain Ahab's single for the
Deathbomb Digital Singles Club. It includes a cover of Brokencyde that
has been a live favorite this year.

4. Our favorite music of 2011
-----------------------------------------------
Well, of course we love Deathbomb stuff. Otherwise we wouldn't be
involved with it. But thought you might get a kick out of knowing what
non-Deathbomb music we loved this year. In November, I was asked to
assemble a best of the year list for Tiny Mix Tapes. It definitely
felt a bit too early in the year to make it, and I ended up leaving
out a few really important things. Also, with something as subjective
as putting albums in an order like this, it is only really the top 5
that I felt super confident about. The rest are great, but putting
them in an order is pretty arbitrary. In any case, here is that list:

25. Tech N9ne – All 6's And 7's
24. Total Babes - Swimming Through Sunlight
23. Born Gold - Body Songs
22. Jurgen Muller - Science of the Sea
21. BITCHES / Yuppies - split
20. Rustie - Glass Swords
19. Gnar Hest - Shag Rent
18. Black Pus - Primordial Pus
17. Yip-Yip - Bone Up
16. Bestial Mouths - Hissing Veil
15. rale - some kissed charms that would not protect them
14. James Blake - James Blake
13. Peaking Lights - 936
12. Snoop Dogg - Doggumentary
11. Kyary Pamyu Pamyu - Moshi Moshi Harajuku
10. Big Freedia - Azz Everywhere
09. High Castle - Spirit of the West
08. tik///tik / Salt Swan - split
07. Captain Ahab - The End of Irony (Red Edition)
06. Crazy Band - Fuck You
05. Terius Nash - 1977
04. E-40 - Revenue Retrievin' Graveyard Shift
03. Joel Jerome - When Beck Was Cool vol. 1
02. Death Grips - ExMilitary
01. "Weird Al" Yankovic - Alpocalypse

For those of you on Spotify, I made a playlist of songs from all the
bands on this list that Spotify carries. Unfortunately, they don't
have everything: http://open.spotify.com/user/footvillage/playlist/242FudTr6TF9PuXYkumqMM

There are some important albums not on this list as well. AIDS Wolf's
new double LP 'Ma Vie Banale Avant-Garde' is a powerhouse, but I
didn't include it on this list since I do pr for the band. U.S.F.'s
new album 'The Spray' has been a favorite of mine for so long that I
forgot it came out this year. And an album that came out at the very
end of this year, that everyone should definitely check out, is this
collaboration between little scale and Dot.AY called 'Loom'. It is on
bandcamp here: http://dotscale.bandcamp.com/album/loom

5. Will 2012 be "cool"?
--------------------------------------
Of course! So much going on! Next week the first single of Digi Club's
2nd year drops! Isaac Hicks is doing animated art and the list of acts
includes folks like R. Stevie Moore, Dustin Wong (of Ponytail), Stupid
Futures (members of Male Bonding, LA Vampires, Foot Village, and tik///
tik), and more. You can sign up at:
http://deathbombarc.bigcartel.com/product/deathbomb-digital-singles-club-year-two

The deathbomb site is getting a big redesign. A hi-tech one at that.
The 100+ releases on Deathbomb will finally be well organized and
searchable. Thank you very much to Andrew at Cargo Collective for his
help with this. http://cargocollective.com/

Deathbomb's 100th release will be out very soon. A collection of
Deathbomb acts doing covers of their favorite songs from the Deathbomb
catalogue, plus a mix of Deathbomb rarities and hits. A free release
as well!

The rRope discography box set will also finally come to life! rRope is
hands down my favorite band to ever rock this planet. Here is a vid of
them playing in 1996: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmJl_iqrqZk

Okay folks! Hope you had a wonderful 2011! See you next year! As
always, feel free to get in contact at dbom...@gmail.com

Love,
Brian
