Great sand filter! Works exactly as I expected!

I've had this for 2 summers now and this Hayward sand filter works like a charm. My pool water is nice and clear. I have a 30k+ gallon 20x40 swimming pool and needed a new filter. This filter is probably larger than I needed but sand is cheap and I think bigger is better when it comes to pool filters. I've winterized the pool twice now and that's really a breeze with this unit, as well. I personally think that sand filters are the way to go since you don't need to handle any carcinogenic DE or replace expensive cartridges. All you need to do is backwash every couple of weeks and replace the sand every few years. Backwashing takes only a few minutes and couldn't be much easier. Don't hesitate!

Good value 30" sand pool filter

I plumbed our 20x40 rectangular vinyl inground pool myself. Once I decided on a sand filter, I found this to be the most economical 30" filter around. The installation was straight-forward. I used 2" pipe in my pool equipment area and I would recommend putting a coupler near the valve so that when you have to replace the sand you can get the valve off without cutting pipe. Just FYI, it takes 500 lbs of sand to fill the filter. Follow the manual and put some water in the filter before loading the sand.
From a performance standpoint, this filter coupled with a saltwater chlorine generator keeps our pool clean and clear with almost no chemicals (except salt at the beginning of the season and some muratic acid to keep the pH balanced) and very little maintenance. We have 1.5" pipe running from the pool to the pool equipment (where it switches to 2"). I have 2 skimmers and a main drain and 4 returns and my filter runs at approximately 13 psi. I haven't had another filter to compare it to, but I have no complaints.

When I purchased the house it had a sand filter on for the pool. I noticed the water was leaking and had the owners replace the filter with a paper cartridge filter.
If, I would have known at the time... to have the sand filter repaired.....I did not.. I chose to have the filter changed out with a paper cartridge filter. The price of filters keeps going up and when you purchase 2 a year a sand filter can be paid with what you purchase of paper filters over the years.
I installed the new sand filter last week, I purchase a much larger filter for the pool than needed.
The sand filter you just turn a valve to clean. You don't week after week clean a paper cartridge. (very time consuming and expensive)
I have had the sand filter on for two weeks and I have still not had to back wash it.
Paper cartridge filters are a waste of money and time.
The water is more clear with the sand filter.
