Dear deal.II developers,

I've written a short overview article on continuum scale modeling in which I mention deal.II (including the preferred reference and a link to the homepage).
For an attractive paper, I want to include the deal.II-Logo. Are there any specific regulations regarding the use of the logo? As far as I figured out, it's also open source but since licensing of images and code is rather different I want to make sure if it is ok. I would of course share the article before publication in case you're interested in the content.

best regards,
Martin

Dear Martin,

Thank you for asking about using the deal.II logo in your publication! I'm not sure what the restrictions on its use are, so I'm going to defer this question to the other developers who have more specific knowledge in this regard. I'm sure that you'll have an answer by tomorrow.

Regards,
Jean-Paul

Martin -- good question. I don't think anyone has ever thought about this. I
would say go ahead and use it. Certainly, as the person who created that
picture, I have no objections.

We do want to get a link to the article, though, so we can list it on the list
of publications at
http://dealii.org/publications.html
We'd appreciate if you could send us a reference once it's published! :-)

Best
W.

What about we put a small licensing blurb on the homepage? Something
like "CC BY 4.0" [1].

That sounds reasonable. But where would be a good place to put this?

What about putting the logo and a download link to a high resolution
variant on the homepage ont the Info -> License page [1]?

Stating something like

deal.II Logo
============

The deal.II logo is copyrighted by ... and can be used under a [CC BY 4.0
license](link to license). You can find a high-resolution version
[here](link to logo).

That would be great. I also don't think we have a high-resolution
(ideally vector art) version yet.

I did a quick vector-art sketch of the logo. Infinite resolution! It
is not 100% symmetric because I traced the image you sent. Maybe a
good starting point though? Maybe we can take the opportunity and
tweak the shape/colors a bit?

Nice job. I don't think the asymmetry is visible. Anyone with picture
editing capabilities out here on the mailing list who'd like to help out
with the logo?

another take on tracing the lowres logo via Adobe Illustrator CS6. The main difference to TImo's is the shape of yellow rim,
which IMO is closer to the original raster logo.

But indeed, there is no hope to keep it symmetric based on lowres input, unless someones jus draws it from scratch :-)

Cheers,
Denis.

Can't one just trace a quarter and mirror it?

I tried that already, the problem is that the sides of the quarter would not have the symmetry to build the whole logo

What I apparently meant is that two sides of the quarter would not be the same and thus the logo will be "less" symmetric.
But you are right, one could always recreate the whole logo from a quarter.

I am fine with adjusting colours, but I like the IBM Courier font as it has relevant history behind.
I believe it is this font which is currently used on a low resolution logo and to my knowledge this font is royalty free.
So i would stick with it.

I think that proposing to use a different font is fair game while we
look at the logo. I don't have a particular preference though I think an
upright and clean font looks best.

The writing is based on Courier IBM, changed to curves and further tweaked.
Three colours are print friendly.

I like it very much. +1

Further, the somewhat different color scheme is also very much
appreciated!

We shouldn't have the "jet color bar" in our logo - it is a terrible
choice :-]

I suggest, we simply put a small number of alternative designs on a
webpage and have a vote (the whole community included).
