Hi,

I discovered this new NAS hacking world, and I'm very excited about
it, especialy the Bittorrent feature.

While I was searching the web, I've found that there is some
unexpensive HDD enclosure with NAS and BT capabilities. It's very
convienent to avoid having two cases and two powerblocks.
Unfortunately, DealExtreme doesn't have any of them.

One of those products caught my attention : http://www.welland.com.tw/html/network/747ans.html

And you will understand what I'm talking about after reading its
specification (translated from this polish website :
http://www.fen.pl/index.php?go=2&act=3&produkt=4961dcf662768&profil=5000&pid=1256&kid=1251
):

aluminum casing, shiny front panel, silver-plated frame,
2x USB 2.0 interface,
10/100 Ethernet network port RJ-45,
3.5" SATA Type I/II HDD
CPU: ARM926EJ 266 MHz (VT8610) <--------------
RAM: 2x 32Mx16 DDR2-667 5-5-5 (K4T51163QG-HC (L) E6)
<--------------!!!!!
Serial Flash: Serial FLASH-16MBit (EN25P16-50HCP)
NAND Flash: 128M x 8 Bit NAND Flash Memory (K9F1G08U0)
<--------------
Network Controller: VIA VT6103X
compatible with Windows WINME/2K/XP/VISTA, Mac OS 9x and higher
File Format: EXT3, FAT (external drives), NTFS (External drives -
ReadOnly)
SAMBA, FTP, BitTorrent client, Printer Server, Web Photo Album,
8 users FTP / SAMBA 8 members (both 24 sessions)
can upgrade the software,
Power: Output: Dual DC +5 V 2A / +12 V 2A, input: AC100-240V, 0.6A,
50/60Hz,
cooling fan provided by 3cm,
The maximum supported drive capacity: 750GB,
Dimensions: 210 x 125 x 38mm,

So to sum it up, it has a 266Mhz CPU, 128MBytes of Flash and the most
important 128MBytes of RAM !!! It's perfect for memory-hungry
applications like bittorrent.

I've searched a bit to find if it's using Linux, and i've found the
firmware archive here : ftp://ftp.fen.pl/sterowniki/Welland/Welland
ME-747AN-S
I downloaded it and discovered it's based on MontaVista Linux. For
firmware update, it seems that, in addition to web interface, it's
using an original method involving an application that is sending
different files to the NAS.

The problem is that I googled it for sooo long and I haven't found any
e-shop where I can buy it. It's only sold in Poland, South Africa, and
Australia. The price start at 77$.

Since the manufacturer is based in Taiwan, I made a product request to
DealExtreme, but it's still pending ...

If you think that this product is interesting enough, you can help by
requesting it too in DealExtreme using this product URL :
http://www.welland.com.tw/html/network/747ans.html

But if you know where I can buy a decent and unexpensive NAS+HDD
enclosure with BT, I'll be gratefull if you give me a link

thank you for the link. I hope that someone here has tested this
device

But I don't think they will ship abroad, and the price is a bit high

Be aware, there is 2 versions of this device modele.

Unfortunatly, I'm getting the wrong one (a Star based one), with fewer
RAM and flash, and 200MHz or 250MHz CPU :(

The good news is that it can very probably run SnakeOS, so I can take
advantage of the existent, and help to improve it.

Just to make things clear :

The welland ME-747AN-S without eSata is based on VIA, and have the
specification I listed in the first post.

The welland ME-747AN-S with eSata is based on STAR, and have only 64MB
of RAM, and 8MB of Flash. I don't know yet what's the cpu speed, I'll
update this informations as soon as I receive the device (by the end
of the next week if there's no problem). I'll be developping a
firmware for this device, that should work on others HDD NAS too.
