Croquis drawing is quick and sketchy drawing of usually a live nude model. Croquis drawings are usually made in a few minutes, after which the model changes pose or leaves and another croquis is drawn. The word croquis comes from French and means simply "sketch". In the clothing design, a croquis is an outline silhouette, for use by a designer.[1]

The short duration of the pose benefits models because they do not need to keep still for a long time; this also benefits the artists because it helps them concentrate on the essential elements of the pose, or the most important parts of the drawing. An artist does not have time to draw all the details, so they learn to concentrate on the important elements. Croquis is also a good method of drawing subjects that generally do not stand still and pose, such as insects, animals, and children.

In fashion, the term refers to a quick sketch of a figure (typically nine heads tall as this is the accepted proportions for fashion illustration) with a loose drawing of the clothes that are being designed. Often a large number of croquis drawings will be created for one finished look, which is fully drawn and finished.

Sketching onto the silhouette of your body is such an excellent way to begin your personal sewing projects! It allows you to visualize and experiment and answer lots of questions before any pattern piece or fabric is cut. A custom sketch is a super helpful tool (and a great warm-up) for confidently moving forward through all the steps ahead.

Shoes and hair can be kinda tough to trace- and are not super important for your garment sketching experiments. Consider keeping them both neutral and simple. Or take extra photos with different shoes and hair styles! You do you!

Though not as ideal as using your actual silhouette, you could use a photo of someone else that has a shape similar to yours, there are also some sketch books with generic yet realistic bodies available and even online services for custom croquis out there.

Consider tracing the faint silhouette onto regular paper and darkening the outline with your pencil (and/or punching up the contrast on your printer for a new printout). From now on, instead of continuing to use your photo printout over and over, you can use the blank silhouetted printout as your reusable scribble-backed croqui-maker sketching tool. Whatever works for you!

Yes, this is about the figure drawing site, Croquis Cafe.

TL;DR: One of the site owners of Croquis Cafe, Sharyn, sent the OP of the thread linked below an aggressive email over using the site's material for educational purposes, refusing to let them refund back the money spent on a yearly subscription for the site despite revoking OP's access to their service. Sharyn has also contacted OP's university deans claiming that OP and other students are sending her threats via email.

i mightve used croquis cafe once?? Or just found it thru a bunch of resources. But reading those emails is actually crazy, but Im glad you added alternatives!! I probably wouldn't find these type of websites

First off, I want to send everyone a very big hug during this really unprecedented time in our lives right now. Between COVID-19 and trying to get everyone to realize how much Black lives really do matter, I know this is a really stressful, emotional time for everyone. Before corona hit I was in such a sewing slump, but fast forward a few months and the inspiration to create has slowly started to come back. I hope I never take it for granted again.

Straight up, my least favorite part of my sewing journal is having to cut out the tiny croquis to glue into their boxes. The dedicated part of me would stress herself out when it came to getting every single piece of paper from between the hands. So when the idea of getting the croquis made into a custom stamp came up, I was more than intrigued.

The shop I ended up using was SayaBellStamps, and they had the option for buying an unmounted stamp so you could use an acrylic block if you wanted. My mom is big into the Scrapbook/paper world, so I knew an acrylic stamp would be a good option, as it lets you see exactly where they stamp will go, and you can change stamps out on the block if you have any other ones you want to use (a great option if you want to swap between your hand-on-hip and arms-down posed croquis, or your front view and back view croquis).

You may have heard that croquis drawing is a good way to practice rough sketching an illustration, but it is more than that. So what is it? In this tutorial, I will go over what croquis drawing is and how it can improve your drawing skills and your ability to draw what you see, even if you're a beginner.

Croquis drawing is briefly drawing something in a short period of time. In fashion design, croquis are used as a template for sketching clothing. The drawing method consists of reducing the complicated details of the human body into the basic elements in order to quickly capture the essential elements (proportion, balance, mood) of the pose. Croquis drawing is great for beginners, as no special equipment is required, so you can practice it even if you only have a sketchbook and a pencil. You can even sketch croquis digitally on a tablet. Making croquis drawing a common practice will also improve your drawing skills because you gradually recognize the most important elements of the figure that you see.

You can use single sheets of drawing paper, but I recommend using a sketchbook. This allows you to keep your drawings together undamaged. Over time, you can look back on your past drawings to check your progress and improvement.

Of course, you can use tools other than pencils! Some people prefer drawing with a ballpoint, felt-tip, or fountain pen. Different pens produce different lines. For example, lines from a fountain pen vary according to pen pressure.

Another option is a brush. Many people like the feeling when drawing with brushes, as they can produce delicate lines. In addition to traditional brushes, you can also use brush pens or watercolor brushes. However, sketchbook paper is generally not made for this kind of wet medium, so the ink may bleed through. Make sure you choose an appropriate paper type for different types of media.

Another benefit of digital croquis sketches is the various pens or brushes you can use. These mimic the feeling and look of traditional drawing media. You can also configure brush tool settings to your personal drawing preferences. I also use a customized brush when digitally drawing.

Although drawing real figures is always best, 3D model features in drawing software and 3D figure apps are quite useful for digital croquis sketches. Some examples of 3D modeling software can be found below:

The painting software Clip Studio Paint offers in-built 3D drawing figures with adjustable body types, height, head-to-body ratios, hands, and poses. You can also use them to sketch out the illustration composition, draw and ink all while using the 3D drawing figures as a guide. Clip Studio Paint is available for the PC and the iPad in multiple languages.

Magic Poser is a 3D character posing app that allows the user to intuitively drag parts of the figure to create poses. Only the male model can be used with the free version of the app. In-app purchases are available for other figures and accessories.

The key to croquis sketching is to quickly draw your lines. Do not fear mistakes and draw as many lines as you need to. As you get used to croquis sketching, adding in some line width variation can bring even more life to your work.

If you continuously draw croquis, you will gradually learn body shape and proportions such as the overall shape of the human figure, bone shapes, the width/length of arms and legs, etc. Additionally, you will learn to focus on where the center of gravity is. Natural poses have an accurate center of gravity.

The benefit of drawing without first sketching the guidelines is increased drawing speed. After enough practice, you no longer need to sketch body outlines because your brain has gradually remembered different body balances and poses over time.

Famous artists often draw characters without sketching them out first. They can do this because they have a strong idea of what they want to draw. It takes a lot of effort to reach this level, but practicing croquis sketches will definitely help you to reach it. Professional artists look at many materials and references and create croquis drawings. Many consistently carry a sketchbook and pen with them to draw the people or animals surrounding them at any time.

Croquis books are a standard type of sketchbook in Japan, popular for their sturdy, portable format and high page count. Commonly carried by university students, croquis books typically feature lightweight pages that work best for dry media. The idea is to fill the book with sketches and studies while simultaneously making finished works on heavy paper or canvas. By integrating a good, reliable sketchbook into your studio practice, you can bring that art-school mentality to your work and sharpen your skills more quickly.

Holbein's take on the genre includes their trademark red, an eye-catching star design along the spine, and an Art Nouveau-inspired cover. This is a great everyday sketchbook for pencil, pen, charcoal, and pastel drawings.
