I do 3 days of aerobic activity and 3 days of weight training per week.

I just bought a Hot Tub and I spend a lot of time in there because it
helps with muscle soreness and is very relaxing. I keep the spa at 88
degrees-Fahrenheit.

I was wondering if there's a way to calculate my calorie expenditure while
I'm in there. Any comments/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Sy

I keep mine at 100-102, depending on my mood. 88 would quickly chill my
bones. Are you SURE your thermometer works?

Off hand, I'd guess you're burning the same amount of calories as you
would if you were sitting on the couch. (You aren't expending any more
energy, so you wouldn't be burning any more calories.)

I can't recall where I 'heard' this, but bacterial growth can be a problem
in a spa that isn't kept at a high enough temperature. The water can then
become quite dangerous because of what has grown in it.

The reason that I keep it at 88 or so is that I've found that on hot days
(I'm in N.J.) the spa is unusable to me if the temp is over about 95. I'm
actually experimenting with the temps right now.

For example, last weekend the temps were in the mid to upper 90's and the
hot tub was at about 96 and I found it quite uncomfortable.

I wouldn't think there'd be an appreciable increase in the amount of
calories burnt lolling in a hot tub - except perhaps the ones burnt
breathing or staying stable withall that floatation support.

The body spends a good deal of energy regulating temperature. Sweating
will help cool the body through evaporation - but not in a hot tub. You
would lose weight by losing water. Drink water in the tub, and don't
stay in too long.

You would probobly burn more calories if you kept the temperature near
freezing, although I don't think sitting and shivering would be a
pleasant way to spend a Saturday night.

K is right...but.....

the Compenium of Physical Activities assigns 2.0 METs to bathing (sitting) and
1.0 METS for whirlpool sitting. To calculate your caloric consumption you must
know your Resting Matebolic Rate (RMR)

RMR=66.473+(weight*13.751)+(5.0033*height) -(6.55*age) for men
RMR=665.51+(weight*9.463)+(1.8496*height) -(4.6756*age) for women

weight in Kg height in cm

RMR is in Kcal/day (you should know that what we american refer to a "calories"
are really Kcals!

so to find your caloric consumption in your hot tub multiply MET*RMR. Since you
are not in your hot tub all day, divide this number by 1440 and multiply by the
number of minutes in your hot tub.

Now seriously, dont be fooled by decimal places. This formula is incredibly
inaccurate, but it is the same one used on those treadmills and so on. I dont
know the error. Just know the sitting in your hot tub burns twice as many
calories as sleeping!-or perhaps the same as sleeping ;)
