This is an interesting list:

http://www.transfermarkt.de/de/transferrekorde-international/transferrekorde/transfers_2011.html

What do we see?
Ah, two Argentines (who were only substitutes at WC2010) leading with
> 40millions EUR. A couple of other Argentines listed, too. There are
Quite a lot of English players, too. So ok.

What about Germans? They are hardly present, German players seem to be
cheap anyway.

NEVERTHELESS, Germany humiliated, spanked and mastered both Argentina
and England at WC2010.

Looks like the most expensive are not always the best....

I forgot to ask:

Q: What did Pastore and Agüero do in the match against Germany?
Answer: Nothing.

Q: What did Higuain, Tevez and especially 100million boy Messi do
against Germany?
Answer: They sucked.

Q: What was the result:
Answer: Argentina 0, Germany 4

I've said it before, Barcelona's deal with Inter Milan over the purchase of
Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and the swap deal, plus 40 000 000 AND Samuel Eto'o for
him, for me, goes down as one of the worst transfers of all time... WHAT?

Only to get rid of him a season later... the reason why bring this up, it
became official on 2011 that he went to Milan, permanently!!!

PL Specific...

Arsenal
OUT Fabregas 40m, good business both ways...
OUT Nasri 25m, good business both ways...
Gervinho 11m, Arsenal have a quality signing on a relative cheap...
Mertesacker 8m, Good, but boy, never comfortable...
Arteta 10m, one of few consistent performers...
Oxlade 12m, one for the future...

Chelsea
OUT Zhirkov 14m, Chelsea done superb to get so much for him...
Torres 50m, Liverpool done superb with this deal, only recently getting back
to some form...
Luiz 25m, Wrong team for such a talented ball playing centre half, decent...
Mata 25m, Quality signing...
Meireles 12m, I'm not going to rate him yet... more games please...
Lukaku 18m, one for the future...

Liverpool
OUT Torres 50, Superb business
Henderson 20, pressured by the price, should end up being good...
Carroll 35, too high, but might still be seen as a project signing...
Suartez 20, Bargain, quality indispensible signing...
Downing 20, Consistent performer...

1960s just called and wanted to remind you they are now called Centre
Back's, Centre halfs are now the guys who play in the midfield.

Did you notice the prices in the web site cited (in Euros) are quite
different from the ones we read about (in pounds) that you talk about
here. Eg Jordan Henderson we keep reading 20 million quid, whereas the
site says 18 M Euros.

Fabregas is at 34 M Euros in the site, 40 Million Pounds (?) according
to you. Nasri seems about the same in both lists. Mertsacker way more
according to the German list.

Does anyone have insight into why the numbers are sometime so different
? Does one list not include future performance based parts of the
contract, or signing bonuses or something ?

LOL

I guess it's ironic as a result, against QPR he was up getting into the
penalty area a lot, and not for a set piece either, speaking of set pieces,
he took a bloody penalty against Genk, and missed... quite an all rounder!!!

One Euro does not equal 1 Pound Sterling. If you factor in the exchange
rate, the numbers match up.

At best the next Mark Hateley. His true worth is about 15 -- and that
assuming he will improve. Lazy alcohol loving f*cker.

Consistently mediocre. His good performances are exception rather than
the norm, as his price tag should suggest.

I think some count for bonuses and performance based... the Henderson deal
most sources say about 20m pounds, however it might be more 15, plus the
bonuses the give the full, potential, final figure, so most reported fees
are quite on the mark, it's just a matter of fee paid, or potential final
fee paid which differentiates what is reported!!!

Make of it as you wish, I just went with what the most popular figure was on
sites I trust... no biggie though, if I were an eskimo, I could probably be
buy ice from a door to door knocking salesperson, i've been wrong on more
than one occasion...

> Fabregas is at 34 M Euros in the site, 40 Million Pounds (?) according to

The figure which is definite is 29m euros, rising to 40m EUROS, now, he has
bonuses and performance based... bla bla bla, which some have been met
already with silverware... Arsenal didn't get robbed completely, more money
will be due when he wins more, so on and so forth...

Although I hope otherwise, Arsenal wont be winning anything, so I doubt
Bremen will be due a great deal more, if he plays "X" amount of games they
will be though... I read 8, though I wouldn't be surprised if it was higher
say 10-12m pounds... heck, I had to pay 24m for him on Football Manager...
and had problems negotiating a contract with him, he wanted 7m sign on
fee... see ya later PER!!!

> Does anyone have insight into why the numbers are sometime so different ?
> Does one list not include future performance based parts of the contract,

I think all of those, and an absolute multitude of other issues, for
instance, Southampton were paid more money the moment Theo Walcott made his
full England NT appearance, but I would be interested in knowing the same...
I'd also like to know of any unusual condition too... I remember Mark
Bosnich saying something along the lines of Man United having an issue with
his shoulder, and not insuring it or something, so if he was to sustain a
shoulder injury, Aston Villa/Or a third party, would have to pay any medical
costs... intriguing!!!

Sometimes yes,, sometimes no. A pound is (still) worth more than a
Euro, though not as much as at some times in the past.

Fabregas for 40 million pounds is expensive. Much better deal at 34
million euros.

Henderson at 18 million euros is still overpriced, but not as much as he
is at 20 million pounds.

If you had read more carefully you would have noticed this.

Sounds about right, David Bentley was like that, now look where he is... I
hope he ends up where his potential suggests he should...

LOL... Hateley was a Wenger signing at Monaco, WTF... I've never heard of
him until this post, definitely off my game... He seems kind of lazy, and
kind of like Pavlyuchenko, if he has a few bad touches early, he will endure
a shocking match, conversely, if he scores, close to unstoppable... so it's
terrible or monstrous!!!

He was always touted as having potential, and a move away from a poor Boro
side didn't happen until they had to sell, now, if he was of great
potential, he wouldn't have had to wait until Aston Villa came knocking when
he turned, what, 24? Now at Liverpool, and I honestly think he doesn't give
a stuff about his transfer price, which is good in a way, a few of the
Liverpool fans around here dont mind him, which had changed my opinion of
the deal...

He got rave review in one match, for his "clever movements creating
space for teammates". I am not at all against giving credit to water
carriers -- but that sounded a lot like praising Heskey's teamwork.
Using speed and skill to beat a man? Probably not his style.

Stewart Downing: 20-odd matches, zero goal, zero assist. Cracking
winger, indeed.

I think it was Souness or someone who was shocked! I repeat shocked
and could not understand why Luiz and not Torres, the inside forward
( the WM or 2-3-5 system right?) took the penalty? Like the whole idea
was unheard of that Villa Boas would perhaps practice or possibly even
have a set penalty taker decided before the game!!! Or even worse that
if they, did the guy who took the penalties would actually be a Centre
back err I mean centre half!?!?!??!?! What are these guys cavemen, the
type who think if you charge the keeper into the net with the ball it
is still a legit goal, or that football boots should weigh 2kg, each
be black and have studs that could go through hardened steel ( I
actually have an old pair of Adidas circa 1950's or older that are
actual "boots". not mine by the way, they belonged to my father) and a
2kg steak with potatoes washed down with a few litres of beer (do not
want to over do it now!) is the proper pre game meal!?!?!?!??!

I understand the whole nostalgia thing these commentators like to
cling on to, but maybe if they evolved a bit, the play would as well?
The Canadian equivalent is Don Cherry for ice hockey and he is partly
responsible for half the kids on the iceberg being brain dead from
concussions and ice hockey still being a form of Mortal Kombat on ice.

That wasn't exactly an endorsement...

Well, just think of what you have had to endure on the left wing over the
last decade... if not, longer, if it's any consolation, Harry Fucking Kewell
is still struggling in the A-League over here... if I were Liverpool, I'd
put in a 5m bid for Moses from Wigan, and try to see if he can play on the
left... not always do they need to be left footed... he can take players on,
probably has the most shots this season for a midfielder, is young, has
greater skill than Downing, and might end up with better stats than Downing
knowing he is in a better team, no disrespect to Wigan... just a thought...

We have Walcott who provides us with genuine misconceptions about
footballers, let alone wingers...

You really have taken all this to heart, haven't you? Most of the
Argentine players had been in europe for a number of years and were
established names before their transfers. the german players were
practically unknown before the world cup. clubs take into account club
form when buying players, not just one game in the world cup.

They are not being purchased for international play, though. I think
that the track records for many of those Argies (like 'em or not) in
club competitions speak for themselves.

Didn't help the Argies that they had a coach who trends towards the
non compos end of the mentis spectrum, either.

And, best of all, Austria in Vienna in the Euro 2012 qualification.

Played abysmally, won anyway. Best of all possible outcomes.

OT cheap Germans, Sahin at 15 million Euros was the bargain of the

I can easily forgive them after their performances at WC2010.

Have you ever rewatched the first 15 minutes Germany against
Argentina? Ever? That was the best football ever shown in the history

You got a point.

Reus, Götze, Schürrle, Kroos were not (or hardly) used at the WC,
though they are incredibly talented. We are all looking forward to an
ever better German team.

OK, doing it now, and there are some smooth moves.

But you're always only as good as the other team lets you, and you've
got to admit that that first goal was owed to Argentina defending that
free kick really badly. It wasn't even some fancy tactics, just Müller
sprinting in from behind, and nobody even tried to contest his header.
And one they were behind, the Argentinians just had to open up, which
is always risky.

Maybe it's a matter of taste, but to me, the best football I've ever
seen was last season's Arsenal v. Barcelona Champions League bout (the
one in London, that Arsenal won in the end.)
