I own a book with recipies for earthversions of different meals from the
science fiction television series Babylon 5 (Dining on Babylon 5 [human
edition], by Emerson Briggs-Walace and Steve Smith, ISBN 0-7522-1143-9)

But being danish, I am having some trouble translating some of the
ingrediens.
Could someone help me out.

Specifically I'm having trouble with:

Bay leaf
MangeTout
Cumin
Chorizo Saussage
Corn Kernels
Leeks

If you know the danish translation, supergreat. Otherwise try to describe
the ingredient.
thank you.

Basically, that is what is known in England as sweetcorn or in the US as
maize, if that helps? I big vegeatable, with yellow large "seeds" on the

Commonly used in soups or pasta sauces. It is typically the size of a
plant leaf (as opposed to other spices where there are very small leaves
or seeds).

I didn't recognize this one. Is this a Britishism? I'm guess we'd call
them a Chinese Pea Pod in the States?

Actually, we call it "corn kernels" in the States but would recognize
the term maize. In the States it also comes in canned or frozen small
squares called kernels.

In the same general family as a green onion or scallion. If you can't
get it, I'd substitute a green onion. If that doesn't work, try an onion
or shallot. It is a milder taste than an onion. It isn't a very common
vegetable here so you may have to go look for it in a green grocer.

There used to be a wonderful cooking APA where we sorted out all of
these kind of things and exchanged recipes. I miss it.

Best,

Sugar snap peas are ones of the same variety as MangeTout but are more
mature when they are picked.

Sugar snaps (snow peas) are thicker with more pronounced shape, Mange
Tout is flatter with smaller dimples along the spine.

You know, call me strange (and I would deserve it) but every
time I've eaten Chorizo sausage, I thought it tasted like
sausage with a taste that reminded me of the smell of an
electrical fire (like the smell of a regular old 1 kOhm resistor
getting fried by way too much voltage/current).

Needless to say, I've eaten it only twice. (The second time
just to see if I was insane or had a bad version of Chorizo
the first time).

Either I'm insane, or it does truly taste like an electrical
fire smells.

Take your pick :)

Matt

P.S. Chorizo is popular in Mexican cooking, I believe, and
possibly originated there? It's widely available in U.S.
supermarkets, but with some proper net searching, you may be
able to learn how it's made.

P.P.S. My first search on a search engine revealed a recipe
for Chorizo: http://www.mexconnect.com/foodboard/messages/696.html
I only know food things in German and English, (and I'm not sure
how reliable my German is) but here's a try at german translation
of some of the things in the recipe:

pork is Schweinefleisch, fat is Fett
lard is Fett
garlic is Knoblauch
not sure about oregano
cinnamon is Zimmt
cloves are Nelken or something (same word as the flower carnation?)
vinegar is Essig.

I don't know if any of that is at all similar to danish, but
possibly some words.

Leeks look a lot like giant green onions (the long thin kind) but
are of course much bigger. Maybe 2-3 centimeters in diameter?
I found a blurb about leeks at
http://www.meijer.com/web/lawn_garden/fruits_vegetables/onions.html

Stuff about peas at
http://www.meijer.com/web/lawn_garden/fruits_vegetables/peas.html

Other good fruit/vegetable stuff (to identify your rulers in the
parallel universe?) at
http://www.meijer.com/web/lawn_garden/fruits_vegetables/fruits_vegetables.html

Hope all this helps...

>Bay leaf
Danish translation.... Laurblad. Turkish bay leaves are considered to be the best. They are a thin, long oval shaped leaf with smooth even edges. They are dry and crispy and come either in a regular spice jar or in bags. Place one in with your sauce or stew and while cooking they get soft and limp. It is best to take the leaf out a while before your sauce is done.

>MangeTout
Don't know about this one but others that have replied say it is like snow peas. These are peas in a flat small pod common in chinese cooking. also called snap peas and sweet peas.

>Cumin
Danish translation - Kommen. Common in Indian and Pakistani cooking I believe it tastes and looks very much like curry powder.

>Chorizo Saussage
Not too sure on this one either other than it is a dried, cooked sausage, thicker than a peperonni that you can eat as is or heat through.

>Corn Kernels
This one is easy although it wasn't known or readily available in Denmark until recently. All kernels are is the little kernels that you actually eat that come off the cob when you are eating corn on the cob. Whenever you buy a can of corn you are in fact buying the kernels, even though it doesn't say so. Green Giant's name is Niblets for example. Also, when you buy a can of creamed corn once again it is the kernels you are buying in a cream sauce. Just buy a can of corn for your recipe.

>Leeks
Danish translation - Porre(r). A member of the onion family that look like a large green onion, or spring onion. A thin long vegetable with a white bulbus bottom and a green long shaft.

Mmm, I thought I was going to score big when I bit
