Hi-

I have a million questions, so I'm sure this is the first of many posts.

I'm used to sequencing on a keyboard workstation (ensoniq's SD-1). I've
purchased Sonar and I have an ASR-10 rackmount hardware sampler and a mackie
1402 VLZ mixer. I transfered the latest project I was working on from
inside the keyboard's sequencer via midi and I trigger a loop via midi from
the ASR-10. I'm using all sounds from my keyboard's internal sounds and
from my sampler. I copied the clip so that it would just play continuosly.
I haven't worked on anything since, because I've been intimidated. I
haven't even finished the song. I went out and got my hands on all kinds of
programs and I'm not sure what is for what.

I guess my question is can you guys help me figure out the easiest set up so
that I can go back to creating and not being so put off by "the technology",
most of which I don't understand anyway? Do I need the mackie mixer?
Should I go with Reason or Project 5? I would like to start using sounds
from soft synth. Do I use a software sampler like Kontakt, or are the ones
in P5 and reason sufficient? And if I go with something like Kontakt or
GigaSampler is that something that I have to work in seperately and then
export to later? I like the Acid loops because I think you can change the
tempo of them and that was something I couldn't do with the loops in the
ASR-10.

Well, any pointers on the easiest software setup possible for a songwriter,
singer who doesn't really understand all the other aspects to this stuff (as
of yet) would be much appreicated. I am reading everything I can get my
hands on (Ugh), but I'm greatful to the newsgroups--you guys seem to really
know what you're doing.

A Million Thanks :)
Rosana

FIRST...
PLEASE:
lets get this TEN Newsgroup CROSSPOST (!) undone!
whew...
thanks!

SECOND,
you might post the question to
alt.music.4-track
as they have a good take on this sort of thing too!

I'll answer this back over on rec.audio.pro

thanks all.

Perspective is vital to wisdom. It is indeed a good
thing to know that for every ELECTRIC LADYLAND there
were months/years/decades of tracking The Archies.

Followup set to comp.music.midi; I left the crosspost in, but
posting to ten groups isn't effective. Most of this is MIDI
sequencing questions, at the basic level.

It can take a bit to get into using any software. You already have
Sonar, and that is a good starting point. It supports DXi and VSTi
software synths, and comes with some as plugins. Sonar has some
looping features like Acid, but the default structure is for
multitrack recording; which is best depends on the song.

The mixer is useful if you're going to hook up external synths, and
if you're going to use any other instruments or vocals.

Going with other software samplers offers a wider range of sample
support -- more sorts of files to use, the ability to use larger
files, and in general more features. But since you're just at the
starting stage, Reason or P5 is sufficient for learning.

A lot of the basics make more sense after you've spent some time
reading the manuals :-) Plus of course, even more important, playing
around with the stuff and making it do things. It takes a while to
learn any piece of software.
