How to fly F/A-18 Hornet over the network:
Overview: You need an irc program, an ipremote extension, and connection
to the correct server to fly over the network. Read steps 1-4. Steps 5 &
6 are optional.
1. Get an ipremote extension and place it into your extensions folder.
You can get ipremote version 2.0b4 (the most recent version) at the
following ftp site:
ftp://munnari.OZ.AU/mac/unsupported/iprem.2.0b4.sit.hqx
2. Use an irc program to find people with whom to fly (it is considered
inappropriate to join a mission in progress without permission).
-Most people use ircle 3.0b.
-You can find ircle 3.0b at the following web site: www.xs4all.nl/~ircle
-Go into ircle program and access any EFnet server (I use
irc.concentric.net) and 'join' the group #hornet (if you are not on an
EFnet server, and you 'join' #hornet you will still get a window for
hornet, but you will be the only person there - you must be on an EFnet
server.)
*Note-we may be switching to #macflightsims or #hornet on a dalnet server
(so check this group if #hornet on EFnet suddenly becomes 'invite only')
3. Talk to people in the chat group to find out the name of the server
and the password for the server. Then do the following:
-Open up your appletalk/network connection and choose ipremote. You will
then be given a window asking for a server and a password.
-For server enter: "get this information from #hornet"
-For the password enter: "get this information from #hornet"
-Then press connect.
*Note: You will no longer need to worry about trying to connect to this
server (except to make sure that it is active via your appletalk/network
connection) - you will connect to it while in hornet, but you will not be
able to 'see' that you are connected to it - you will just notice that you
will be able to see other people connected to the same server while you
are playing Hornet. You should load Hornet AFTER you have made your
ipremote connection (loading it before establishing the ipremote
connection may prevent you from seeing the other players).
4. Talk to people in the chat group and arrange to fly with them.
*Note: You must fly against people who are using the same type of
computer (mac vs pc) and the same version of Hornet (i.e. Hornet 2,3,and
Korea are not compatible with each other).
*Note: Flying with 3 people rarely, but occasionally works, and flying
with 4 people apparently never works (feel free to bug GSC about this...).
5. Once you decide to fly with another person, do the following:
-Talk to the other player and decide who will host the mission and what
rules by which you will fly.
-The person hosting will go into hornet and choose 'host network.' This
player will then choose a room and a mission to fly (the missions
available will appear in the window and the room number appears as a
pull-down menu in the same window - change rooms by clicking on the room
number and picking the room you want). Then choose the team in the lower
right corner of the window.
*Note: most people play the Rig it, Rig it mission because the aircraft
begin close to each other. Slower computers may prefer to fly the
Shoot'em Up mission (or any other non-sea mission).
-The host then returns to irc and informs the other person of the room and
mission that they are hosting.
-The other player then enters hornet and chooses 'join network' This
person then picks the same room and mission as the host.
*Note: It may take up to 30 seconds for the hosted mission to appear in
the window.
-This player then choses the team in the lower right corner of the screen
and returns to irc to tell the host that they are connected.
-Both players then go to the preflight window in hornet and type to each
other to make sure that they are actually connected.
-Once they can type to each other, the players both quit irc and then
return to the preflight window.
-The players tell each other when they are going to enter the game, and
then choose 'fly network.'
6. Have fun flying!!
