Antisemitische Nachrichten in MS-Windows ???

Hey everyone!! Did you know that Microsoft is advocating the killing of Jews
in New York City? I sure didn't! But it's true! I read it in the paper!

Get ready for a whopper. Once again the news media proves that it doesn't
know the first thing about computers. The entire story, retransmitted
without permission, is below, as it appeared in today's New York Post.

For those who don't know, the Post is a tabloid paper, where the entire front
page is one huge headline. So, screaming out at millions of New Yorkers this
morning was the headline, "PROGRAM OF HATE". Above the headline is a photo
of one of those old PC green-screen displays, with "NYC" = <skull> <Star of
David> <thumbs-up sign> superimposed on the screen. Above that is a
subheadline, "Millions of computers carry secret message that urges death to
Jews in New York City..."

So, without further ado, here's the story:

ANTI-JEWISH CODE LURKS IN POPULAR SOFTWARE, by Don Broderick

One of the world's best-selling computer programs contains a secret
anti-Semitic message apparently urging death to Jews in New York City.
A computer consultant discovered the diabolic message while installing
Microsoft's new Windows 3.1 software for a client yesterday.
The consultant was testing a mailing-address use of the program when he
noticed the letters "NYC" had been replaced by a hateful message - a skull
and crossbones, the Star of David and an approving thumbs-up symbol.
Microsoft strongly denies any hidden message. Others disagree.
"There's no way it could be a random coincidence," said Brian Young, a
friend of the consultant, who does not wish to be named.
"It's pretty scary. I was pretty shocked by the whole thing."
Computer owners who use Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word or any other Microsoft
program containing a print font named "Wingdings" can duplicate the
anti-Semitic message by typing the letters "NYC" on their screen.
Microsoft said "Wingdings" was designed by Bigelow and Holmes, an outside
vendor, and denied that Microsoft intentionally designed the secret message.
Prof. Charles Bigelow confirmed that his company provided the symbols, but
insisted that Microsoft made the final "mapping" decisions assigning his
symbols to specific keys on the keyboard.
But a senior Microsoft spokesman said the charge that the fonts contain a
hidden message is "outrageous."
"It's like saying that if you randomly type out characters on a keyboard to
spell 'Satan', you can do that, but it's incredible to say that there's
anti-Semitism in Microsoft or one of its vendors," said Charles Hemingway.
But Young, who discussed the matter with other computer consultants, isn't
so sure it's just a coincidence.
The "Wingdings" font contains no letters - just 255 symbols.
Young calculated the odds of three letters of the alphabet being combined
with 255 symbols, and said he found that the odds of obtaining the message
were less than one in a trillion.
"It's mind-blowing," said Young. "Somebody's responsible for this. This
is very offensive."
"I found it hard to believe some of the stories about the resurgence of
Nazi sympathizers - but this puts things back into perspective."
Microsoft, based in Seattle, is the world's biggest software publisher,
with 100 million customers around the world and sales of more than $2.3
billion in 1991.
When Windows 3.0 was introduced in 1990, customers were snapping it up at
the rate of 30,000 a week.

-- end of article

Above the story is a line of some of the various symbols in the "Wingdings"
font, with the caption: "LOADED: When a specific font is used in Microsoft's
Windows, these symbols, which correspond to the alphabet, appear. Type the
letters NYC, you get the death sign, the Star of David and the thumbs-up."

So what do you all think? Should we load up the buses and make a pilgrimage
to Redmond to firebomb Bill Gates's mansion, or what?

------- End of Forwarded Message

[EVERY computer-mapped linguistic utterance will correspond to some
sequence of symbols in this alphabet, so there are certainly many other
combinations that will be offensive to someone. For example, the word
CYNIC will begin with thumbs-up, Star of David, and skull and crossbones,
and end with another thumbs-up. Two thumbs-up are not necessarily good.

Oh No! (*plopp*)

Das ganze lief vor ziemlich genau einem Jahr schonmal in

irgendeine "teuflische Botschaft" o.ae. interpretieren. Erinnert mich

Well, it appears that the Brainless Millions once again have the upper
hand. Hot off the press, here's the story from Thursday's early edition
of the NYPost...

FURY SPARKS DEMANDS FOR END TO COMPUTER 'HATE CODE', by Don Broderick

The discovery of an apparently anti-Semitic message lurking in a computer
program sold by the world's biggest software publisher set off a furious
storm of controversy yesterday.
The coded message, seemingly urging death to Jews in New York City, was
found in Microsoft's new Windows 3.1 software.
Microsoft insisted it is a coincidence that the program replaces the
letters "NYC" with a skull and crossbones, the Star of David and an
approving thumbs-up symbol.
"We are very sensitive to the hurt feelings of the Jewish community,"
said Microsoft spokesman Collins Hemingway.
But he said people who believe this is a secret message "are the same kind
of people who listen to rock records backwards."
However, Rabbi Pinchas Stolper of the Union of Jewish Congregations of
America said: "It's easy to see all these little things as being random and
unimportant, but one gets the sense that something is loose in our society
and someone better start worrying about it."
Mordechai Levy, founder of the militant Jewish Defense Organization,
warned that the Jewish community will not idly stand by in the face of
anti-Semitic messages.
"Hate messages should all be made illegal. If we find any computer person
is involved in this we will track them down - and put them out of
business," said Levy.
Brooklyn Councilman Noach Dear said that, coincidence or not, Microsoft
should change the program or be subject to a boycott.
The Anti-Defamation League of the B'nai B'rith, which contacted the office
of Microsoft founder Bill Gates yesterday, was assured by Microsoft it would
consider changing the assignment of symbols on the keyboard to avoid the
problem in future versions of the program.
"We think it was a reasonable and immediate response. We will follow it
and monitor their progress," said ADL spokeswoman Myrna Shinbaum.

--end of story

Personally, I think that Microsoft should tell them all to go screw off if
they really believe this. Even if a boycott was started, Microsoft would
probably save money in the end, since any people that participated would
be the same ones calling tech support four times an hour asking where
Drive C is.

They'd better test all possible combinations of words and acronyms, or someone
else will find something, regardless of what they do.

I wonder if that consultant described in the first story bothered to take
a count of all popular acronyms, correlate it with the 26 symbols mapped to
the alphabet, and calculate the odds of at least one of them coming up with
a combination that someone somewhere could conceivably interpret as being
anti-something.

I suspect those odds would be pretty good. There are any number of people
who spend their waking lives hunting for this sort of thing.

The important odds are those of obtaining any messages at all. You
find that out by printing a "dictionary" of words and acronyms with
the Wingdings font. A decent sized dictionary will probably yield
dozens of symbol strings that look "meaningful." This is not because
someone is embedding "secret messages." It really *is* random chance.

No matter how Microsoft (or anyone else) assigns keyboard keys to
symbols, you're going to find "secret messages" of that kind.
Whenever you have symbols with negative connotations, they'll end up
being associated with _some_ other letters. Thus, you'll have "hidden
hateful messages."

> "It's mind-blowing," said Young. "Somebody's responsible for this. This
>is very offensive."

I find ignorance and headline hunger far more offensive.

If we all want to start a Real Witch Hunt, we can start running
dictionaries against every symbol font out there. The Mac has Cairo
and Mobile as well as those Postscript fonts like Zapf Dingbats. I'm
sure we can indict Cairo for being anti-Arab, we just have to look
close enough at where the guy wearing the Fez shows up. DON'T TAKE
THIS SERIOUSLY. This is mass hysteria and media idiocy at its worst.

There will always be good reasons to get mad at Microsoft. This isn't
one of them.

Hmmmmm....255^3 * 26^3 ~= 290 billion. Hmmm, upper and lowercase makes 52
letters, for 255^3 * 52^3 ~= 2.3 trillion. That's less than one in a trillion
all right.

I'm with the other posters -- someone post the list and we'll find as many
other examples as possible, with one of three desirable results:

1) The stupid rumour is completely discredited and forgotten.
2) The media gives even MORE attention to the rumour and we sit here laughing
our heads off.
3) 2) occurs and, as a result, Microsoft is financially destroyed and Bill
Gates becomes a pauper.

I'm rooting for number 3, personally...

NAME
wingding.l

DESCRIPTION
A lex program to assist in investigating "secret messages" in the Wingdings
font of Microsoft Windows. Theory: if we generate enough of these and flood
the media with them, the public will eventually catch on to the silliness
of the whole exercise. To make, do

lex wingding.l
mv lex.yy.c wingding.c
cc wingding.c -o wingding

BUGS
This is a fast, sloppy hack. The problem doesn't deserve anything better.

And now, more Wingdings decodings from the Paranoids for a Better Tomorrow:

BSA (Boy Scouts of America): hand-"okay"-sign raindrop peace-sign-hand
Obviously these are secret instructions that it's OK to spit on peaceniks.

FSU (Former Soviet Union): pointing-right raindrop cross
God's gonna flood the commies out till they convert!

FBI: pointing-right hand-"okay"-sign palm-forward
The FBI is OK and protects you. However, the use of the Hindu palm-forward
mudra for "protection" may indicate that our stalwart G-Men gave been
Corrupted by Foreign Influences.

CIA: thumbs-up palm-forward peace-sign-hand
Everything will be OK if we can just stop the damn hippies.

NBC: poison-symbol hand-"okay"-sign thumbs-up
We'll rot your brain, but it's OK. Really. Think positive.

CBS: thumbs-up hand-"okay"-sign raindrop
We'll make you so happy you'll cry.

ABC: peace-sign-hand hand-"okay"-sign thumbs-up
Gad! This network's been infiltrated by those damn hippies!

All hail Discordia!

Thanks for posting this. I had a lot of fun playing with this while I was
waiting for my downloads to finish.

For example, I came up with:

IBM: palm-forward hand-"okay"-sign bomb-with-fuse-lit
Wait...it's supposed to crash.

INTEL: palm-forward poison-symbol snowflake pointing-left frowning-face
Hey! Use our cool 80x86 chips, they're backwards compatible...uh...
even with the 8086.

MAC: bomb-with-fuse-lit peace-sign-hand thumbs-up
Hippies with a bomb?! Right...it must be good...uh...whatever you say.

ATARI: peace-sign-hand snowflake peace-sign-hand sun palm-forward
Yikes! Even more hippies flogging the coolest thing this side of the sun.
In the end, you'll wait for something else.

...I'm just having problems interpreting the rectangular-flag in:

It crashes so often it could make you cry, but it isn't square to cry.

How about ichthus (Greek for "Fish", but an early code word for Christ) ?

palm-forward thumbs-up pointing-down snowflake pointing-down cross raindrop

Which means:

It's ok to push him and put him down, it's cool that he was buried, crucified
and spit on.

psu: triangular-flag (Symbol for god) raindrop cross => Jesus wept.

My anonymous sources have given me the following listing of the Wingdings
font:

Hands:
A = peace sign
B = "okay" sign
C = thumbs-up
D = thumbs-down
E = pointing-left
F = pointing-right
G = pointing up
H = pointing down
I = palm forward (i.e., "Stop")

Faces:
J = Happy
K = Indifferent
L = Frowning

Danger:
M = bomb with fuse lit
N = poison symbol

Flags flapping in the wind:
O = Rectangular
P = Triangular

Random:
Q = airplane

Weather:

R = sun
S = raindrop
T = snowflake

Religion:

U = cross
V = shaded cross
W = fancy cross
X = Maltese cross
Y = star of David
Z = Islamic icon (crescent and star)

My sources point out that "LA" = frowning face, peace sign, which shows that
Microsoft predicted the riots in Los Angeles after the Rodney King trial.

I'm interested in what other messages people can find. If anyone has the
address of the New York Post, we could send them a list of the messages
Microsoft "hid" in the font.

A few messages I've found:
UNC = cross, skull & crossbones, thumbs-up: Obviously Microsoft thinks
Christians at the Univ. of North Carolina should be killed.
UCB = cross, thumbs-up, okay: Christians at UC Berkeley are okay?
GOD = pointing-up, rectangular flag, thumbs-down: God above us, gives a
thumbs-down to political divisions.
UN = cross, skull&crossbones: The UN is conspiring to kill Christians.

Well, I'm sure you can all do better :-)

Since the article supposedly quoted a spokesperson for the Anti-Defamation
League, has anyone bothered to check to see if the report was legitimate?
This sounds like the kind of crap that you find in the "newspapers" at
supermarket checkout stands.

With all the very real problems in the world, one could hope that the
so-called leaders would worry about real discrimination and not such
utterly spurious issues such as this. And that the so-called news media
would be responsible in its reporting.

But that's probably too much to ask.

>>[what other "messages" could be created?]

Here is a quick map of the WingDing character set, based on the encoding
vector names found in the file WINGDING.TTF. Since I don't have any
tools to actually map the names to the printed glyphs (and the manual which
came with the TrueType disks has been borrowed) I printed out the entire
range 0x20 throught 0xff, then manually built this map based on "best guess"
techniques. Some of the mappings are probably wrong, but at least you can
use it to construct whatever symbolic message you wish to inflict on your
local paranoids.

name "square6".

Here's my list of paranoid acronyms:

IDF (Israeli Defense Forces) = stop, thumbs-down, pointing-right
"Stop complaining about the awards given to the generals by settlers".

TA (Tel Aviv) = snowflake, peace sign
"Peace is as likely as snow in Tel Aviv".

PLO = flag, frown, flag
"The PLO does not support a two-state solution".

UJA = cross, happy, peace
"If the Christians back the loan guarantees, there will be peace"

CIS = thumbs-up, stop, raindrop
"The breakup of the USSR will prevent future Chernobyls."

SHAMIR = raindrop, pointing down, peace, bomb, stop, sun
"Shamir will discourage the peace process, bringing a war, in which so
much oil will be burnt that the sun will be hidden"

LEVY = frown, left, cross, star of David
"David Levy sulks, is a leftist, is going to double-cross the Jews"

RABIN = sun, peace, okay, stop, poison
"Rabin will win the elections this summer, bring peace, succeed in office,
and stop polution"

Here's a few more acronyms:

D = thumbs-down
E = pointing left
C = thumbs-up

Several interpretations of this: pointing fingers at someone else, left hand
doesn't know what the right hand is doing, etc. :-) (for the humor-impaired
and DEC's legal squad :-) )

U = cross
C = thumbs-up
L = frown
A = peace sign

It's approved for Christians at UCLA to take part in the riots.

C = thumbs-up
U = cross
N = skull&crossbones
Y = Star of David

Thumbs-up on death to Christians *and* Jews at CUNY. Or maybe it's the
thumbs-up for Christians to kill Jews at CUNY. This one's worse than NYC. :-)

B = OK
Y = star of David
U = cross

Jews and Christians are OK at BYU (Brigham Young University in Utah). How
ironic ...

I think the single biggest problem with all of this is having the religious
symbols map to alphabetic characters. Move them, replace them with something
insignificant like geometric shapes, and it would be a lot harder to come up
with anything offensive.

Disclaimer: these are mine and do not represent any philosophy of my employer.
Probably none of Microsoft's, either.

I have just had a bit of a play with Windows 3.1 (a curse
upon it and all its descendents) so I tried typing JEW. It
came out as a smiley face, a hand pointing left and a
cross/crucifix. Not very interesting until you remember Hebrew
is read from left to right - if obviously is saying
"Christianity makes you happy". Very sinister.

This is fun. Anyone else want to try it?
