REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)
unmoderated group comp.lang.java.jini

This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of a
world-wide unmoderated Usenet newsgroup comp.lang.java.jini. This is
not a Call for Votes (CFV); you cannot vote at this time. Procedural
details are below.

Newsgroup line:
comp.lang.java.jini Jini Technology users and developers forum.

RATIONALE: comp.lang.java.jini

Jini Technology allows digital devices to connect via a network and
build a community. It has been created by Sun and runs on top of
Java. The goal of this newsgroup is to provide a worldwide connection
between the users of Jini Technology. This is vital to the young
community, because although Jini itself has been soundly defined by
Sun, many issues around Jini still have to be extensively discussed.
One example would be a set of interfaces, which are needed to
recognize the functionality of different devices. So far there is no
official standard for these interfaces, although it is essential for
devices to be able to interact (more information about Jini
Technology can be found at www.sun.com/jini). Other topics can be
reports of bugs in the Jini platform, announcements of new
developments or help for newcomers and advanced users, issues that
are common to many other technology platforms.

Mailing lists to the topic of Jini Technology already exist (see
www.sun.com/jini/subscribe.html), the biggest of which is jini-
us...@java.sun.com, but with about 1100 subscribers (jini-users as of
March 1999, see archives.java.sun.com/archives/index.html), this
media is already overcrowded and therefore inappropriate. A newsgroup
with its more passive nature would provide a much better approach to
the information.

The newsgroup should be located in the comp.lang.java namespace,
because Java is essential for Jini Technology. Before one can use
Jini, he/she first has to be able to program in Java. Therefore the
Jini newsgroup should be on a layer below the comp.lang.java
newsgroup.

CHARTER: comp.lang.java.jini

comp.lang.java.jini is intended to provide an assistance-link for new
and advanced Jini users, discussion of new developments, discussion
of standardization issues and other Jini related topics. Questions
about the structure and handling of Jini Technology are appropriate,
as long as they are not too much related to the Java language itself.

END CHARTER.

PROCEDURE:

This is a request for discussion, not a call for votes. In this
phase of the process, any potential problems with the proposed
newsgroups should be raised and resolved. The discussion period will
continue for a minimum of 21 days (starting from when the first RFD
for this proposal is posted to news.announce.newgroups), after which
a Call For Votes (CFV) may be posted by a neutral vote taker if the
discussion warrants it. Please do not attempt to vote until this
happens.

All discussion of this proposal should be posted to news.groups.

This RFD attempts to comply fully with the Usenet newsgroup creation
guidelines outlined in "How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup" and
"How to Format and Submit a New Group Proposal". Please refer to
these documents (available in news.announce.newgroups) if you have
any questions about the process.
