Workshop Summary:

Meta-cognitive skills are essential characteristics of successfull
learning
since they empower learners to analyse and understand their own
knowledge
state and learning process. Research in many areas, for example,
adaptive
systems, open learner modelling and group learner modelling, dialogue
management, pedagogical agents and affective computing, have addressed
the
problem of how to encourage learners to engage in a variety of
meta-cognitive
activities.

The purpose of this workshop is to explore various issues concerned with
the
development of novel computational architectures for individual and
group
modelling that help learners reflect on their learning and understand
better
themselves. In this way, it can be seen as a successor of the Workshop
on
"Open, interactive and other overt approaches to learner modelling" held
at
the 9th World Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education at Le
Mans
in 1999. We would like to encourage in this workshop empirical
investigations
and experience with existing architectures that suggest advantages,
indicate
potential problems, and propose further extensions. Furthermore, new
perspectives to support meta-cognition through individual and group
modelling
will be discussed. These may include educational theories that justify
the
advantages of such approaches as well as formal methods that support the
application of the architectures in a variety of learning situations.


Topics:

Topics include but are not entirely limited to:
- Giving learners control in diagnosis
- Interactive cognitive modelling
- Interactive modelling of affect
- Maintaining distributed student models e.g. to help the learner
examine
and use multiple models of themselves
- Modelling groups of learners to increase group performance and
improve
learning
- Using student and group modelling methods to promote meta-cognitive
skills


Participation:

The workshop is intended to be a small, interactive event lasting a full
day. Attendees at workshops must also register for the main ITS 2002
conference. We encourage the active participation of experienced
researchers as well as those new to the field, especially students. To
stimulate productive discussions, the workshop will include paper
presentations (see submission details below), and short position
statements by workshop attendees. Please contact the workshop organisers
if you intend to participate in the workshop discussions.


Submission of Papers:

We invite submissions of papers of ten pages or less (including all
tables, figures, and references but excluding a cover page) and 1 cover
page which should describe: Title of the paper with an abstract of less
than 500 words; four keywords giving a clear indication of a main
topic and possible subtopics; Author names with affiliations, addresses,
and phone numbers; and the Email address of the principal author. The
format should be either Word documents, Postscript or PDF. Email the
paper to Paul...@unn.ac.uk or va...@comp.leeds.ac.uk. If email is
not possible, post the paper to Prof. Paul Brna, School of Computing
and Mathematics, Ellison Building, University of Northumbria at
Newcastle,
Newcastle NE1 8ST, England, UK.

Accepted papers will be published in the Workshop Proceedings.
