This is from Kevin Bentley - Senior Programmer for Outrage Entertainment

Friday, September 24, 1999 1:54 PM

We've nearly completed the 1.2 patch, and in order to make sure it is as
good as possible, we've decided to do some external beta testing.

In this build, the two major changes are to the input controls and to the
network performance. Both changes should restore 1.0 functionality. There
has been some server side bandwidth reductions in this build as well, which
should really improve network performance.

We are releasing this 1.2 beta patch as an exe only. You will need to make
sure you are already patched to 1.1 before using this. Once you download it,
unzip the exe into the Descent 3 directory, then run d3_12_beta.exe
directly. DO NOT run the launcher. The launcher will not launch this beta
version. You cannot run this beta version from the start menu unless you add
an icon yourself. When you start up the beta version you should get a
message box saying that this is a beta version. If you don't see that
message box, you aren't running the correct version.

Note the following information about the controls:

-alternatejoy -directinput

Either of these two options will use DirectInput for joystick control and
are useful if you're unable to utilize certain features on your controller.
An example would be the Logitech Wingman Interceptor which has three hats
which will not work without using either of the above command line options.

You can download the zip file containing the beta exe at:

http://www.outrage.com/files/d3_12_beta.zip

Please remember, this is only a beta test of some specific fixes for 1.2.
This is not a final product. Please send all commentary to
d3b...@outrage.com

Just received this email from Tricord

"This is a little message to inform you of the release of a brand new
Descent 2 single-player campaign, called Obsidian. Ellusion Design, the team
who created it, has been working very long on this project, and now it's
ready for release.

I really recommend that you head over to the Ellusion site and that you
download the mission, as it is one of the most awesome level-sets ever built
for D2. And yes, even if there's Descent3 it's worth to switch back to
Descent 2 for this mission.

You can find the Ellusion website here :

MaddHattr's Monsterball How-to

So you wanna play Monsterball, eh? How hard can it be? You just shoot the
ball in the goal... right?

Wrong. Believe it or not, there's actually quite a bit of strategy within
Monsterball. Do you fire at the guy shooting at you, or do you fire at the
ball? Do you drop off to get more weapons, or do you stay on with your
lasers and concussions? Well I'm here to tell you how to win at Monsterball.

Hey Interceptor!

"I want to know what's "the catch" with your online hosting. Sounds to good

XmaXtor via the Internet

Hello XmaXtor!

to the people that we currently host for conformation at any time.

"What we are offering:

Web Space: We are offering 10 Megs free disk space for your Descent web
site. If more space is needed it will be allocated at our sole discretion.
Large download files may be moved to a much faster server with a larger

What we expect from you:

Good all round Descent content, what we "Descenters" would call a good and
interesting web site. In other words, your site needs to just plain ROCK!

Commitment! Keeping a site up and interest, not a site that has not been
updated for 3 months!

Place our DescentWorld Logo at the top of every one of your pages, that's
it! Done, nothing to it, you're in business."

There's a working version of the SquadWar rules available on the SquadWar
site. http://www.squadwar.com

The basis for Squad War is that organized squadrons should be able to
conquer and defend regions of space. Squad War allows multiplayer squadrons
to challenge other squadrons for control of territory in the universe. Squad
War is an organized form of team vs. team multiplayer gameplay. PXO servers
will maintain a list of registered squadrons (each has a name, a password,
and a list of members) which will be managed by users through a web page.
Squadrons will fight it out (via team vs. team missions) for control of
sectors. The PXO database will keep track of which squadron controls each
sector. http://www.squadwar.com/rules.cfm
