|The solution is fairly simple. You need an smtp mail server which
|is able to distinguish between local and remote domains. Mail
|addressed to any domains which are configured to be local to the
|server will be sent, regardless of origin (local or remote) to
|pop3 mailboxes (or gated to disk) for your Outlook clients on the
|network to collect. Mail addressed to any other domains is queued
|in an outbox until you go online. You can then deliver this mail
|direct to your isp's smart host or via mx lookups, depending how
|your outbound mail routes are configured.

smail-3 would be ideal for this -
ftp://ftp.planix.com/pub/Smail/

There's a new version out too if I recall right, no? I tend to refer
Exim (http://ww.exim.org/) or Vmailer, but that's largely a matter of
personal rather than technical preference. (Tho smail is definitely
the candidate of choice if you're going to do an UUCP work).

Why would you refer people to a program that's not even available?

Please be a little more careful with your quoting. The actual
object of that sentence was Exim. That said, truth to tell I was
not aware of the release status of VMailer. We have (and are
testing/working with) a copy here at SGI, so I assumed that it was
available at some level.

My bad.

You're being as shifty as I was! The sentence read "I rend to refer exim or
vmailer". Both were equals in objectaciousness. I left out exim because it
confused the issue.
