DEVRY DIVERSITY SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMITTEE
MINUTES
(For meeting held on August 20, 2009)
The meeting commenced at 5:30 pm. Present were: Professor March,
Jorge James, Yovina Tanamas-Miller, Kayanna Roberts, and Tamika
Adjedho.
Special guest: Ms. Adena Johnson (Center Dean).
Professor March brought Pizza and Coke!!!
The following suggestions were made by Ms. Johnson:
To check out the following sites as a means of communication:-
•
www.dvusga.com
• E-college shell
• Google groups – this we informed her that we already have
As a means of recognition and getting our name out there, we should
host an event/function, such as “Dinner with the Dean, etc”.
Get involved during the school’s graduation ceremony
Passport-to-college program – where Juniors/Seniors students come to
school for some time in the summer, earn credits which can be used for
their enrollment to colleges.
Her world programs – becoming a mentor for high school girls
Books for thru Bars Association
Be included in the televised broadcasting for the school (that is
information being displayed on screen monitors in reception areas).
Since she is a part of the executive and leadership body for DeVry
metro, which usually conducts meeting once per month, some matters can
be taken up there for on our behalf.
Outline our goals, objectives, timeframe and what we expect to
received from the group
Think of how we would like to be displayed on the televised screen
Jorge asked the question about whether or not DeVry (Center City) have
a student body? Ms. Johnson responded by saying no – which kind of
gives us an opportunity to fill in the gap. She further mentioned
that she is limited as to how much she can do for us under the present
level we are at and express that operating as a functional group will
allow us to expand as she herself will be able to do more. Mr. March
is to complete an application form pertaining to the group and submit
to Ms. Johnson.
Samples of the T-Shirt design were brought in for review by Tamika but
Ms. Johnson mentioned that the photo used on it needed to be original
or would otherwise be considered plagiarism, something that the
institution principles stresses strongly against. In addition to the
printing, Ms. Johnson also mentioned that DeVry have several vendors
whom they worked with, so some of these services can be utilized. A
sample of the T-Shirt was taken away by her.
A copy of the handout/brochure (the one designed by Jorge) was also
circulated but not much was said on the matter. Since the group will
function on a per information basis right now until all the standards
has been satisfied. The next meeting date is opened, Mr. March will
inform/announce when.
DeVry University Center City will be having their opening ceremony for
the new areas/services (1st, 2nd, 11th and 12th floor operation)
sometime during the month of September. This is something that we can
keep in mind and help to build some awareness.
The formal part of the meeting concluded at about 6:10 pm.
