I have a 2012 MacBook Pro with retina display. I'm trying to get Dolby digital through the hdmi port and after comparing some media attached to my receiver the same movie was Dolby digital on my WDTV and using the same cable was stereo connected to my MacBook Pro.
The Toslink cable is not the answer. Even with the Toslink cable, stereo is the only output possible when connected to the optical input of my Marantz Dolby enabled receiver. In setting, dolby 5.1 is not possible. No dolby with HDMI either. I can create Dolby files in Audition, and play videos, but output is strictly stereo, with center channel muted, and no output to LFE channel.
Just for the record, the expensive Thundebolt to HDMI or mini Display port to HDMI only do stereo too. Not a big deal for most, but upsetting if you're expecting a HDMI to function as it does in any other piece of equiptment!!
The above information is wrong. The advisor I spoke with was wrong and I should not have assumed she new what she was doing. The new Macbook Pros do do 5.1 surround sound out of the HDMI port so long the movie has it. Like Netflix and Hulu, iTunes store media can be HD without dolby digital sound!
