I have found that one of my favorite text editors for programming is Geany, however the default color scheme is very bright and hurts my eyes when programming for awhile. There are other color schemes available for Geany but no clear way for installing and using them. Anyone have an idea?

You can download the github page from -themes.then what you do is extract that file somewhere, then run the install.sh file located directly inside the geany-themes file and it will put all the new themes in the correct place for you.

It may not be directly referenced, and a little tricky to find, but I did find more descriptive definitions in the online Geany Manual at -colors-section (It's under the section titled Special file filetypes.common.)

However, if I double click on a file (say **.cpp, .h or even the project file *.geany) I get the generic, Default colour scheme. If I go to Change Colour Scheme... it only shows the two default themes (Default and Alternate).

It appears to have a different .config/geany/colorschemes location depending on how I start Geany. Is this a bug or a feature (that I'm not understanding)? ... or is there a way in Geany or Linux for me to get a consistent experience?

There's a bunch of really nice colour schemes available from the geany-themes project. Consult the README* file in each release/repository for instructions. In Geany, check the Help menu and About item to check the version you need to download.

However, if you're like me and you have the Long Line Marker visible on the screen, its color might not look good on the newly installed Geany theme. To set the Long Line Marker color, you need to do this in Geany:

I have two computers, each with Geany. One has the colour scheme that I like for Python, the other one has some sort of basic scheme with only keywords highlighted. I've looked and looked without any success at filetypes.python and filetypes.common. There's nothing in colorschemes apart from alt.conf.

Unzip the downloaded file and navigate to its colorschemes directory. You will see a bunch of files with .conf extention. Copy all of them to /.config/geany/colorschemes/ (if you're on Ubuntu) or to C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\geany\colorschemes (if you're on Windows)

While the caret-setting (changing the default to a block cursor) works(which obviously indicates that I configured the setting in the correct file),the cursor_color setting does not seem to have any effect,as the cursor is still a light grey.

If you would really like the portable version of Geany you can download it on PortableApps.com: _portable. Extract the package to your flash drive. The download the Geany themes from (I guess this link points to the same site you gave on your blog post). Extract the themes. Copy all the files in the filedefs folder in Geany themes folder to F:\\\ Your Geany installation/App/DefaultData/filedefs directory. Next, copy all the files in Geanny themes/colorschemes to F:\\\Your Geany Installation/Data/settings/colorschemes folder. Then restart Geany. There you have it; your portable Geany IDE with all these themes to choose from. ;-). No need to search for the config folder plus you got your IDE everywhere you go.

2. The configuration file saved, but nothing happened anyway.
-As is, the tarball (zip) extraction slightly buries the themes in extra folders.
Mine were in something like
/.config/geany/colorschemes/geany-master-themes/colorschemes
instead of just
/.config/geany/colorschemes
as mentioned in the post.
Moving all the files up a couple directories solved this right away.

Hi everyone, after running the one magic line, I could not change the colour scheme anymore. I tried the above proposed solutions, but did not work for me (Lubuntu13.10). I simply save the folder /.config/geany/colorschemes somewhere else, uninstall gean (sudo apt-get remove geany), remove the foldor /.config/geany

I tend to stick with the same dark color theme across all editors (vim, geany, sublime, pycharm, webstorm, eclipse), so I consider setting the color theme part of the initial setup when configuring a new computer.

Saving the file would download the .conf file to the destination of choice. OK, now I just need to copy or move the file to the location: /.config/geany/colorschemes/ as mentioned in the Geany website. Remember that .config file is a hidden directory. If you are using GUI file manager, make sure to enable seeing hidden files/directories .

It is in this folder that we can navigate ourselves to the /config/geany/colorschemesfolder to paste/save the .conf theme files that we downloaded. So I save the file to the said location, namely: /.var/app/org.geany.Geany/config/geany/colorschemes.

Currently using Pluma i have to save the file as .jack.cpp. I get the C++ color scheme, which is better than nothing and then when I want to compile I save my file to .jack (This is my current work around).

Pues la paleta de colores del blog, llego a estar así, porque ando en mi etapa de oscuridad. Así, que se me dio por variarlo, por allí me aburro y voy cambiando, por allí paso todas las fuentes a blancas para evitar problemas visuales.

Thanks a lot for this, however you lack to explain how to install it anywhere. Not even in the readme file. Finally I just dropped all the stuff extracted into .config/geany/colorschemes. Geany complained a bit when restarted but after changing the color scheme in view-editor-color schemes it worked alright ?
