All,

Sorry for the blank message earlier. Please send to the list ASAP if you are willing to sign on to this letter TODAY. I realize this is short notice, but we need to get this out ASAP. Right now it's just Emma and me.

Here's the letter. It's not perfect I'm sure, but I think time is of the essence. A lot of names at the end will be compelling:

-------------------------------------------

We, the student leaders of DC area universities, wish to express our support for the students of Gallaudet University in their time of crisis. No University can be successful without its students, and we are dismayed that Gallaudet University administrators have chosen to ignore the demands of students.

We are especially concerned about the reports of police brutality against peacefully-protesting students, and the University's refusal to provide interpreting services to students in this crisis situation. It is an act of cruelty to deliberately send in police with no sign language skills to arrest deaf and hard of hearing students.

We stand firmly with the peacefully protesting students of Gallaudet University.

Sincerely,

Emma Simson, Student Body President, University of Maryland
Laura Moore, Graduate Student Body President, University of Maryland

Dear Colleagues:

Lamar and I visited Gallaudet University yesterday afternoon.  We met with several student leaders, faculty, staff, alumni and students.

We were on a fact finding mission; to retrieve information in order to bring it back to this body.  My assistant will be providing notes from the meeting to this body within the next few days, however, the best way to understand what is going on is to visit and visiting the sites that Noah gave in a previous email.

We do not want to act alone.  Therefore it is recommended that we speak with our Executive Boards and Councils and stay on the same page as much as possible.

We have made a commitment to supply the students who are protesting with necessities like blankets, food and moral support.

We also support their first amendment right to peacefully assemble and their right to freedom of speech.  In a statement made on their make-shift platform, Lamar said, "This [Protesting] is your God given right!"  I echoed his words and feel the same way.

We shouldl have a teleconference to discuss this issue.  Does anyone have teleconferencing capability?  And is everyone available Monday evening at 9:00 p.m.?

William

Everyone,

William -- that's great you met with Gallaudet folks! It's wonderful that you are helping them out.

I'm available to meet Monday 9pm in person or virtually -- would it be possible to meet in person somewhere in DC? I realize it's far for some people, but we can provide meeting space at UMD. There is a free shuttle from the College Park metro station to campus and it runs every 10 minutes. Also the campus is about a 20 minute drive from downtown DC.

Does anyone know if Noah (Gallaudet student body prez) was among those arrested Friday night?

Thank you Laura!  Lamar, Jarrett and I have now made personal appearances at the University.  The support is growing fast.

I can call in on the teleconference which has been provided by Emma.  (Thanks Emma!)  That would be better for me due to my time constraints.

Noah was not arrested, I believe, but I will have to check that information.  134 students were arrested though, all were released and back for more protesting.  Their will is strong and unbreakable.

I will give more of an update on the teleconference and possibly have Heather make some statements from Gallaudet.  Heather has been helping the student leaders with verbal communication.

Will

Hello fellow Presidents!

I just got back a few minutes ago from Gallaudet University.  I was accompanied by SA Senator Luke Moses and one of my cabinet vice presidents, Andrew Cooper.

I met Noah and he is doing great!  William is right their will is STRONG--they aren't going anywhere!

All I can say is that if you haven't been there you need to go and experience what is going on.  I have had difficulty explaining this protest because it's been difficult for people to conceive that students have taken over a university--well they have!

This is more than just a student protest, its community cause.  There are faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, students, and plain ordinary community members sending a strong message.

As we speak Andrew Cooper is buying charcoal and blankets for our delivery on Tuesday.  Senator Moses is also working on getting every last SA senator down to Gallaudet by Friday so that they to understand.

GW, UDC, Marymount and Maryland don't stop there--we're going to continue moving forward but we need everyone's help as well.   Please join us--if you need a ride to GU, I'll pick you up and take you there.

Respectfully,
Lamar Thorpe
Student Association President

Fellow Presidents-

I as the SBG President of Gallaudet University must express the gratitude to
those people who have expressed their support for Gallaudet's cause.

I have met Lamar of GWU. I have not met any other president yet because I
was running around, taking care of errands.

Lamar and his people have asked me what we expect from other universities.
I told him that charcoals, blankets, and food is what we need the most. I
also told him that if you have any kind of connections to the people on the
hill, please use that to communicate this situation to them. Please also
try to reach the mayor of D.C. about this situation too.

I want to answer this question that has been circulating...no, I have not
been arrested because five of my team was already sitting down, waiting to
get arrested. It was indeed one of the darkest moments in Gallaudet's
history.

That is all.

You can reach me at n...@tmail.com for much quicker response. :-)

With best regards,

Noah Beckman
SBG President

Noah:

It is good to hear from you. You are so welcome. It is an honor to be involved and show support for our fellow students.

Hopefully, you can have someone on our teleconference tonight to shed some light on the situation who has first hand knowledge; someone who will relay the information to you.

Our teleconference is at 9:00 p.m. If you need information let me know. It was sent out yesterday and today.

I look forward to seeing you tomorrow. We will agree on a time tonight.

William
