This is where democracy shows its signs of imperfection.  Ward 8 had many good (great) options last night, and perhaps that was “the problem”.  Or perhaps we Democrats want to hold our leaders to higher grounds (we didn’t see Republicans rushing to oust George Santos).  Most of us who don’t live in Ward 8 thought it best NOT to weigh in and let the residents of Ward 8 decide and elect their leader, as they have.  But I do want to say thank you to Ms. Sheila Bunn for stepping up and providing a good alternative for Ward 8.  Sheila’s exemplary lifelong commitment to public service and experience, provided a great opportunity for Ward 8 (and our city) to move forward.    Maybe on the grounds of our democracy, AND the fact that the “people have spoken”, the DC Council and the city will move forward in harmony!    Congratulations to Mr. Trayon White.

Statement on the Results of the Ward 8 Special Election

Ward 8 Democrats President Troy Donte' Prestwood issued the following statement on the special election results for Ward 8 Council:

We want to congratulate Councilmember-elect Trayon White on winning the 2025 Ward 8 Special Election, recapturing the seat stripped from him by the DC Council back in early February. The DC Board of Elections will certify the vote on August 8 and we expect the councilmember to be sworn in and seated on the council shortly thereafter.

We want to thank every voter who made their voice heard—whether by mailing in your ballot, dropping it in a secure drop box, or visiting an early voting or Election Day vote center. Because of your participation, Ward 8 will soon have a councilmember to serve and advocate for our community in the District's legislative body. We would like to thank the DC Board of Elections' Vote Center workers, staff, and volunteers for conducting a well-run election in our ward.

We also want to acknowledge the other campaigns. To each candidate who stepped up to run: thank you for leading respectful, clean, and spirited campaigns. While your bids may have come up short this cycle, your platforms, including those focused on housing, healthcare, public safety, education, and equitable access, remain vital to the future of our ward. Your voices—and those of your supporters—are still needed in the fight for Ward 8.

Now, we turn to the D.C. Council. The voters of Ward 8 have spoken—again. We call on Council Chairman Phil Mendelson and the other 12 members of the Council to immediately begin engaging Councilmember-elect White in the remaining FY26 budget deliberations. Though he may not be able to cast a vote just yet, his voice—and by extension, the voices of Ward 8 residents—must be at the table. It’s the right and democratic thing to do.

We look forward to working again with Councilmember-elect White and the entire Council to ensure Ward 8 continues to receive the attention, investment, and respect our community deserves.

— The Ward 8 Democrats

Phillip, I am surprised that not almost 100% of voters in Ward 8 reject political corruption! RCV isn't going to solve all the imperfections of our democracy, it too has its flaws. And while I recognize its recent popularity, only 2 states implement RCV statewide (with some other 50 jurisdiction, which as of April 2025, accounts for about 14 million voters nationwide). At the end of the day, through RCV, you may claim that you won an election with over 51% of the votes, but the true number of people that fully support a candidate is more likely reflected on the first round. Yes, if RCV was used, it is likely that the special election of Ward 8 could have favored another candidate, and not Mr. White, but that would be making some mayor assumptions.

I believe the Democratic Party has moved at a pace that its leadership considers adequate, allowing dissenting voices to be heard. Just because this measure has not been popular within its leadership, it doesn't mean we are not visionary; the majority simply doesn't have a strong view in support of RCV. And in the case of I-83, which includes open primaries in DC, I can understand Party leaders not wanting non-Party individuals voting in their Primaries, -should we also allow Independent candidates to run in the DC Democratic Primary?

In terms of the DC Council, I pray they make the right decision, which is NOT as easy as you make it sound. Would you like the DC Council to revoke I-83, which was voted by the people? Ward 8 has elected the same candidate, under the same condition, 2 times now!

Thank you for you comment.

Franklin Garcia.

Good Morning Franklin,

70% of the Ward 8 voters rejected political corruption. But because of DC’s antiquated electoral process a candidate can win with 30% of the vote. Our Democratic Party leadership is resistant to fresh ideas and change and is militantly protective of its incumbent protection program. I am sick and tired of the status quo agenda of our party’s leadership. Finally last week the council approved rank choice voting, which was introduced by Christian Henderson five years ago.

The only thing that keeps me from seriously considering changing my party affiliation is that I know rank-and-file Democrats are far more visionary than the party’s leadership. That is why Initiative 83 handily won in every voting precinct.

I hope the Council expels Trayon White again. Mendelson described his venal behavior as “quintessential corruption.” That situation has not changed and a candidate receiving 30% of the vote in an election with 12% of the registrants participating hardly justifies the Council seating a crook.

Yours for political progress,
Philip
