Folks:  In reading the Mayor's Bulletin, it looks like there will be Public Engagement Forums re: Chancellor on August 28 and September 11.  I know that we had discussed sending a Commission letter with our concerns.  Looks like we our time frame may be pretty short for input.  Unfortunately, I am on work travel both of the dates of the forums...but would be happy to look at any drafts and provide input.

Is David or John able to check with the other Commissions to see if they're planning to draft/send letters to DCPS regarding the Chancellor search? If they are, we may want to try to coordinate with on a timeline as we start drafting our letter.

I also am happy to help draft any letter and provide input.

Aloha mai kakoū,

Note that OSLC (committee that will provide recs to Mayor) will be meeting on Oct 8th to review community feedback and guide the development of the Chancellor Search report. I took a look at community feedback from all 3 forums and incorporated those. On October 22, OSLC will be finalizing recs to Mayor, so as long as we submit before Oct 8th, this letter is relevant.

Feel free to provide any edits directly on google doc. Will defer to you all on letterhead/formatting/etc.

Best,

Well written! Thank you Bruce. I appreciate the paragraph supporting matter-of-right neighborhood schools, these are fundamental to strong communities. Once I get the ok from the commission I will have staff send a hard copy to the DME and a mailed copy.

How do we go about doing that since our next meeting isn't for a couple weeks?

Good question. Does this require a vote or can we just discuss this here since the commission has decided about writing this for at least two months (last two meetings)? If we do not get this done as Bruce said by the 8th the letter becomes irrelevant.

Bruce-- thank you so much for taking the lead on writing this letter. I appreciate you getting the ball rolling on this. I added some minor comments for consideration.

Re: approval of the letter. I agree with David, that this has been discussed at length at in our past meetings. I'm personally ok, with moving forward with sending the letter to meet the timeline.

the bylaws say that an action can be taken without a meeting on behalf of the commission in writing if it's approved by the majority.  So I believe what we would need is a majority to reply to the email that they approve the letter being sent.

Thank you Bruce - great job.

I am meeting regularly with the interim chancellor as part of her 2018-2019 Parents Cabinet.  It's a great opportunity.  There are 3 parents per ward on it.  One other AAPI parent serving.

I mentioned to her that we would be submitting a letter to the committee. She has applied to be permanent. But obviously I made it clear we are not recommending anyone in particular.

In the google doc, I added two comments suggesting explaining "trauma-informed" --- and the word "conduct" in the line about undocumented.
Not essential. Just my two cents.

Thanks again,
Kishan

So at the moment we have 6 approvals.  Bruce, just to be clear, I can't infer your approval even if you were the author of the letter, you would have to reply explicitly saying you approve if that is the case

David,

I think with 7 commissioners in approval, that is enough of a majority for you to go ahead and send the letter.  Please let me know if anyone has any questions.

Hi David,

How do we go about doing that since our next meeting isn't for a couple weeks?

Well written! Thank you Bruce. I appreciate the paragraph supporting matter-of-right neighborhood schools, these are fundamental to strong communities. Once I get the ok from the commission I will have staff send a hard copy to the DME and a mailed copy.
