Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez Patricia de Nicolaï |
Dear Friends of La Maison Française, La Maison Française is pleased to announce the following two lectures on French perfumes, presented in collaboration with the Smithsonian Associates. Co-authors of Perfumes: The A-Z Guide, Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez, together with Patricia de Nicolaï, director of the Osmothèque whose family founded Guerlain, are sure to provide unique and fascinating insights into the world of fragrance. 1) Fri, Feb 5 at 6:45 p.m. – “The Art of Fragrance with Luca Turin and Tania Sanchez, co-authors of Perfumes: The A-Z Guide” This lecture will cut through the usual perfume-babble to illuminate the art of fragrance. Despite the millions of marketing dollars poured in, the beauty of a fragrance can't be predicted by cost, degree of nudity in ads, or appeal to nostalgia: It all still relies upon the perfumer's difficult art. This lecture, scented throughout with examples, delves into the enjoyment of fragrance, the chemical discoveries that made modern perfumery possible, and the enduring mystery of how our noses figure it all out. Luca Turin is a biophysicist at MIT, author of “The Secret of Scent,” and chief technology officer for a fragrance molecule design company. Tania Sanchez is widely published on the topic of perfumes. Their book, “Perfumes: The A-Z Guide” (Penguin), will be available for signing. WHERE: La Maison Française, Embassy of France, 4101 Reservoir Rd, NW ADMISSION: $40 (use program code 182151 to receive member rate of $25!) Includes complimentary bubbly following the program! TICKETS: http://residentassociates.org 2) Sat, Feb 6 at 10 a.m. – “Perfumes: An Exquisite Exploration with Patricia de Nicolaï, Tania Sanchez & Luca Turin” This cultural and practical primer on fragrance will allow participants to smell masterworks of the art of perfumery that have been unavailable for decades, as well as new scents. The rare collection comes from Versailles' Osmotheque, the International Conservatory of Perfumes, just for this event. It includes the great progenitors of today's scents, ranging from the fougère to oriental to floral to the chypres. Patricia de Nicolaï is the director of the Osmothèque, the International Conservatory of Perfumes, and founder of Parfums de Nicolai. WHERE: La Maison Française, Embassy of France, 4101 Reservoir Rd, NW ADMISSION: $150 - Includes Turin and Sanchez's book, “Perfumes: The A-Z Guide” (Penguin). Each participant will also receive a special gift from Bloomingdale's!
