It appears that we can use categories or tags (not both) in a Google Group.  Any preferences?  If we do categories, we could follow a similar format to the forums (dcm4che, dcm4chee, weasis, oviyam categories).  However, we could also just make some default tags which give a similar functionality (at least when searching).

I'm leaning towards tags...  Thoughts?

I like tags, I've seen posts on the old forum that are relevant to more than one category.

Does it also use automatic tagging ?
The problem I might see is with incubator projects.

Ooops, I tried to answer this via email and:

Technical details of permanent failure:
The group dcm...@googlegroups.com does not allow posting through email.

That's probably my fault.  I was trying out some different settings yesterday.  I'll take a look at it.

And following that:

I admin two or three groups on Google but I haven't used tagging or
categories, as they're very simple.

Can tagging be applied when sending from a mail client instead from the
Google Groups page?

Modified settings.  Testing reply-via-email again.

Should we use only the current tags, or maybe add some more for multi-tagging, like:
mysql, oracle, db2, linux, windows, java, osx, osirix...

A tag for xls rules would be handy.

When you create a new topic here, I believe you can create/use any tags you want.  I will certainly add some more defaults, but that does not limit people on what they can do.

Right now it's in mode "Only suggested tags" :P

I added the suggested tags.  I don't see a way to change that mode though Andor.  Do you know how?

I've been checking the docs and it may not be possible. :(

It says:

" Tags are created by a group administrator for the group and then applied by members to individual topics."

That's ok.  I'll just add a ton of tags.  :)

I am in a similar situation to poster  "andor" and would like to ask the same question. As well as whether a category can be specified when sending mail from a mail client. I  don't see how that would be possible. So I am wondering if the group owner/manager can retroactively put posted  emails in categories after the emails are sent.  I can't assume that everyone in my groups will post from the web group rather than their mail clients, since not all have google ids.
