Friends,

With the help of OpenMRS developers, I am kicking off a new project building on the OpenMRS radiology module, which integrates dcm4chee with OpenMRS and provides IHE compliant worklist and reporting.

My goal is nothing less than a fully featured, open source RIS.

Currently, there is nothing like this out there, other than Clear Canvas RIS abandonware.  So, this is an opportunity to build something unique and extremely useful.

The interesting aspect of RIS vs DICOM is that implementing PACS usually takes weeks (it is a standard), while RIS takes months to years to fully implement and customize. So, done right, I think there will be possiblities for support and cutomization contracts, once a fully featured and scalable system is in place.

Ballpark figure is about 12 months to: improve scheduling, reporting and HL7 integration.

So, if anyone wants to get in on the ground floor, as it were, please let me know. I will be creating a github organization for this shortly.  Also, if you can think of a good name for the project, please speak up.

Cheers,
Aaron

Hey!

Count on me too. You know I'm onto systems and not development, but I'll
let some people know about this, and let me know any systems, testing,
translation or whatever help you may need apart from touching code
(unless there is small python or bash coding involved)...

Thanks!

Looks interesting !

I don't have much free time right now but I'll gladly help in a few months.

For the name something like RISes or RISing maybe...

okay!!! Welcome, eveyone.

I've set up a github organization called FreeRIS:

It contains two repos, the core OpenMRS repo, and the radiology module that works with dcm4chee.

Here is a link to the OpenMRS dev guide:

And here is a demo link to the OpenMRS system:

I will look into getting a demo of the radiology module, so people can take it for a test drive.

Cheers,
Aaron

I am not a Java expert, but would like to see a Open Source on RIS. Please count me in for any developmental help. Completely agree on our views on Clearcanvas.

Hey Boxer,

I am software engineer and customize/build plugin to dcm4tchee, weasis and work with medical tools. In fact, this is a good ideia and I'd like to participate with analysis and developing the solution. I'm from Brazil and market here need it.

Rady, Rafael,

Welcome! It's great to see so much interest in this project.

Currently, I am working on a dev install of OpenMRS on my system.  Once I have this working, I will give a quick
rundown of the steps needed, so you can all try out the radiiology module.
One twist is that I would like to use Postgres as the db, but most OpenMRS installs use MySQL.

Next step is to discuss features, time lines, releases, etc. Developing a RIS is a lot of work,
but I hope it will be fun!

In the mean time, I highly recommend reading the OpenMRS dev guide:

I found it interesting and inspiring.

Speak soon,
Aaron

It’s good to see so many people interested in an Open & Free RIS. I agree with you decision to go with Postgres - that would be my choice too. However in the interests of diversity we should consider supporting other databases in future, like dcm4chee.

Like you say, there’s a lot of work ahead.

Suresh.

Hi Suresh,

I agree with you about the need for multiple db support. OpenMRS-core supports both dbs out of the box, or so they assure me on the dev user group. They use Hibernate, and being database agnostic is one of Hibernate's strengths (and weaknesses) :)
But OpenMRS is also made up of a vast collection of modules, and these modules sometimes use mysql-specific code.
I have to check with the radiology module dev, to see if this is a problem with the radiology module

By "use Postrgres",  I meant that I prefer deploying and developing on Postgres.

Cheers,
Aaron

Hi All,

I was thinking more of cloud platform for the RIS.   We all can invest our time and knowledge into it...

We can find a brand name, open a website and give of a service from there.  We can all be owners of this system, and  split the profits we make of it.

Than one day we will sell it of to Corporation....   This way we will be rewarded for what we do.  The customer payments will pay for our server costs and will make us extra money.

Thanks

Hakan

Hi Aaron,

Great to see you are focusing the right approach, as suggested lets get our hands on on the Specifications, time lines and releases. This will put all of us on track. Few modules like Billing are Regional, so working on a product that has a over all scope will be very good approach.

I like to Plugin architecture from Clearcanvas, I agree it is over engineered but provides options for users to write their country specific module and wire them in the RIS workflow.

Cloud based is an interesting angle, but from my experience any thing can be ported to a cloud at the operating system / database level. We should leave the users to port it to a specific cloud like AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform.

All exited to roll up and work on the specifications.

with regards
Rady

Hello Aaron,
What is the status of this Open Source RIS project? I went to https://github.com/FreeRIS and it is a 404.
I would like to contribute in the development effort if this project is still going.
Please update the status for us.
Thanks,
sorcerer

Dear all :)

I started to contribute to this RIS

The original author Akhil stopped working on it, but the code can actually be found at:

I wrote a puppet module and packed it into a vagrant project, so if you want to have a look at the module please check out:

If you want to join the discussion on future development please join:

The module is great, but definitely needs some more attention.

It would be great to get some more people involved in the discussion, development, testing :)
I really hope you guys are still out there and interested in working on this together!
Cheers,
ivo

Hi Algie,

great :)

well to start you could use the vagrant/puppet project to set up openmrs and dcm4chee in a VM and deploy the current openmrs radiology module. Please follow the instructions on:

This will help you get to know the current status of this RIS. There has only been one release 0.1.0 which was quite some time ago.

Would also be great if you could join the discussion on

I am currently adding unit tests, trying to get the module to use a newer openmrs version (module is stuck with 1.9.x due to some dependency/deprecations) fixing minor bugs, and setting up continuous integration on travis CI.

Are you also interested in programming? Or more from the admin/systems side?

Help on every aspect is very welcome :)

Let me know if you have any troubles with the installation
Cheers
Ivo

Thanks for the links. I will read and check each sides.

Im both on programming and admin side.

I will let you know soon for any updates or feedbacks.

Dear all,

development of the RIS

has picked up pace lately (code is getting cleaner, continuous integration is setup, unit tests are added, bugs are fixed, ...)

If there is anybody interested in contributing: java developers, sysadmins (also interested in automation via puppet) or people with knowledge of radiology workflows
it would be great if you would join at:

If you just want to try out the module here is a puppet/vagrant project for quick installation:

Cheers,

Hi, has anyone been able to deploy an OpenSource RIS that can interact with dcm4chee?

My office in Jamaica is running dcm4chee 2.18.1 and we are trying to evaluate a RIS that will work with it. If you're able to assist (we're willing to pay), please send me a message.

Thanks,

SJ
