to dcm4che

Hi everyone,

I am currently maintaining a healthcare system that relies on dcm4che2 running on JDK 6. Due to increasing security concerns and compliance requirements regarding legacy Java versions, we are planning to upgrade our stack to dcm4che5 and a more recent JDK (11 or 17).

Since dcm4che5 is a significant architectural shift from version 2, I would appreciate some guidance or best practices on the following points:

  • Migration Path: Are there any official migration guides or documented experiences for moving legacy dcm4che2 configurations/services to dcm4che5?

  • Breaking Changes: What are the most critical breaking changes we should be aware of regarding the network layer and DICOM object management?

  • Library Compatibility: For custom tools built on the dcm4che2 toolkit, is there a recommended strategy for refactoring them to work with the version 5 API?

  • JDK Recommendation: Given the security focus, is dcm4che5 fully optimized for JDK 17, or is JDK 11 still the preferred stable environment?

Our primary goal is to eliminate the risks associated with JDK 6 while ensuring minimal downtime for our DICOM services.

Thank you in advance for your time and any insights you can share!
